My mom has been making this dessert for years. SHe usually does not invert it, so when i made it I didn't either. Fewer dirty dishes! But I followed the directions, and apparently she does something different because mine wasn't as good as hers. I suspect she puts spices in the batter like some others mentioned. I'll have to ask her! ---------------------------------------------------------------- update: I made this a second time, and the key: Instead of dusting the sugar and spice mix on top after its baked, toss the apples in it before arranging them in the pans. Fabulous with real whipped cream on top! Not as sweet as apple pie, but a satisfying dessert that both adults and kids at our hosue love.

this is my daugther's grandmothers recipe. I was looking for something easy and awesome to make for dinner with friends. I remember this pie and how I loved it. So I am making it, tonight

I've made this several times, and love it. I'm going to make it this weekend, and I think I'm going to try peaches this time.

This was edible, but not something I would make again. My pies/cakes did not completely invert, the texture was too spongy, and the flavour was too bland. I ended up making a simple brown sugar sauce to serve with each slice, which is probably the only reason these cakes were eaten at my house. Although this recipe is easy and cheap, I wouldn't bother making it again.

Tasty! Though it was a little hard to spread the batter over the apples. Once it was done and flipped out onto a plate I used 1/8 a cup of brown sugar and 1/8 cup of granulated white sugar along with the cinnamon and nutmeg for the topping. Next time I'll probably add some more spices to the batter like some cloves and vanilla. Great served with sugar-free vanilla ice cream!

Great easy recipe. I added more spices to the dough: 1/4 tsp each of ginger, cinnamon, allspice, and clove. Also 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract. It's a keeper.

This is a pretty good pie/cake, although it could use a few more spices in the dough. I think next time I try it, I'll add some vanilla, or cinnamon.

So simple and so yummy! My 3-year old helped me line the pie plates with the apples and also helped to mix the batter. It smelled wonderful once out of the oven and sprinkled with the cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar.
