The broth and flavor of this soup was really good. I used the nine bean soup mix bag (cause it was on hand) and wish I would have stuck to just the northern beans. There is a bean in the bag mix that stays crunchy and it's just weird.

This was ok, not sure if I'll make it again, but if I do I will blend half of the beans and water in order to get a creamier texture rather than having it so watery.

I used 4 cups chicken broth and 2 cups water per other memeber's recommendations. Soaked beans overnight and rinsed in the am. I brought all ingredients except chopped ham and white pepper to a boil and then simmered for 1 hour. I then discarded the ham hock and transferred everything else to the crockpot, added the ham and pepper and cooked on high for about 4 hours and then low for 2 more. It was pretty good.

I really liked this soup! It's different but good! I added some red potatoes and chicken broth per suggestions. And then I added a little cream to fool my husband into thinking it was more of a creamy soup. I also used canned beans to save time. It was better the next day! Very tasty and easy!

This was very good. I, too, used all chicken broth and cut it down to 6 cups. I cooked it for 7 hours on high in the slow cooker and it turned out perfect!

Very good- even my picky husband and little boys who don't like soup enjoyed this. I served it over rice to make it a little more filling.

Great basic recipe. I both bumped up the flavor and simplified prep as follows: Soaked the beans overnight in a crockpot (just covered with cold water), in the morning I drained the beans and returned them to the crockpot. In a skillet with a tablespoon of butter, I browned a roughly diced ham steak (didn't have a ham bone)with the chopped onions, garlic, celery and carrots. This took about 5 minutes. I then added the ham/veggies to the crockpot with all the spices and 8 cups of chicken broth (instead of water) and cooked all in the crockpot all day (10 hours) on low. Soup was fantastic, great flavor, not bland at all and very simple to prep. My husband says it is the best soup I have made this winter...and I make a lot of soup!

My family LOVES when I cook with Great Northern and/or Navy beans. And, yet, in 40+ years of cooking, I had never before used "hocks" in my preparations. But my supermarket had them on sale ($0.99/lb.) so I thought I'd buy some and see what I might be able to do with them. Which is how I came across this recipe. I used 2 "hocks" and left out the haml other than that, I followed the recipe. My soup/stew was DELICIOUS. Not only will I be making this again and again, but I think I'll be using ham hocks in many of my preparations from here on out. Succulent and DELICIOUS, NUTRITIONAL and ECONOMICAL to boot. When one is attempting to feed 6 (+1 "on the way"), who can ask for more?

Outstanding! The one change I made was I did, like others did, decrease the amount of water to 6 cups rather than 8. The soup came out rich and mellow, with a thickness that was just right. Not too watery, not too pasty. I will make this many times again.

Delish! I wish I would have read the reviews first because I definitely would have cut back on the water. Instead I added a large cube of veggie bouillon and used my hand blender a bit to thicken and flavor the broth.

My family loved this soup - the only changes that I did was I took everyone's advise and used a ham bone and Chicken Stock but also instead of dry beans I used a can of White Kidney Beans (Rinsed) Soup was on the table in less than 45 minutes !!!

This recipe is a work of art,it is so good. I used a variety pack of dried beans I got from the Amish, and a big hambone from a restaurant and about 2 TB of honey and cooked in crockpot for 10 hrs overnight, absolutely wonderful.

Excellent and very easy! Great way to use leftover ham. The chaanges I made are as follows: boiled beans for 5 minutes in water nd then soaked for 60 min. I drained the beans and added back to pot with 6 1/2 cups of chicken broth and an additional 1 cup of water. I used 1/2 bag of baby carrots, 4 stalks of celery, 1 large russet potato and 1 whole onion. I then let it simmer away on the stove top for almost 2 hours. It was perfect!
