I tried these thinking they would be easy and taste great, after seeing the high rating. I'm not sure if it's my taste buds or what, but I didn't like them. They tasted way too strong of baking powder (and I even leveled it off so it was the exact amount). I used butter flavored shortening and a tsp. of margarine in place of the regular shortening, but even if it changed the taste, it wouldn't have made that much of a difference. I had a gut instinct to add some lemon juice and sugar as a buttermilk substitute that I briefly saw on another recipe, but never use buttermilk & short on time so decided against it. I think that may have been exactly what this needed to make it taste great, but that's just a guess. I will try it in the buttermilk substitute in the future, but unfortunately will not try it with this recipe again. I made these along with a homemade chocolate syrup recipe that I have been bragging on for a long time to my husband - the chocolate syrup turned out great, but was just not enjoyable because the overpowering baking powder taste in the biscuits. Very disappointed. :(
