Tasty, hearty and perfect for a chilly night. The family ate it all. No leftovers.

Very good and I really liked the consistency. I made it exactly as written. My only change would be to maybe add more spices and some green peppers or chiles. It was tasty and warmed the belly but lacked umpf. Nice recipe though, thank you.

i did a wee bit of tweaking to the recipe - i added 2 cloves of garlic, half a red and half a green pepper. i didn't add the cup of water because i used instant barley (cooks in 12 minutes) that i added for the last 30 mins of cooking. that gets 4 stars... but then i added some garnish - grated mozzarella and sour cream, and that makes it a 5 star. :) got leftovers which i'm presuming will be even better after standing a night in the fridge. om nom nom++!

I loved this recipe. It is one of those recipes that you can make substitutions and it still comes out great. I had no tomato juice so I used I cup of condensed tomato soup and 1 1/2 cups water with a beef boullion cube..no other liquid. I also added garlic, mushrooms, about a 1/4 cup of canned corn and I seasoned with chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper and a couple of squirts of tabasco. Like I said you could probably throw anything in there and it would still be great. Thanks.

I read other reviews and changed this just a little. I added cumin instead of the chili powder. I also added carrots and a can of diced tomatoes. Placed in the crock pot for about 6 hours on low. I will make this again - my husband and I thought it was a great way to end a cold day. good as a leftover as well.

This was good for an easy Sunday supper. I doubled the recipe so I would have leftovers. I pretty much stuck with the recipe, except that I used V-8 instead of tomato juice, and added some minced garlic and a beef buillon cube. Also, I followed one of the reviewer's tips and cooked it in my crock-pot. I will definitely make it again, but I will probably cut back on the beef and add some veggies, like carrots and green pepper for a little variety of texture. It's a keeper though, for sure!

Too much chili powder and I could only find the instant barley so it did get mushy.

We really enjoyed this dish. I added chopped carrots, used V-8 juice instead of tomato juice and substituted cumin for the chili powder. Also added a bay leaf. The left overs were wonderful on a rainy Sunday. Will be making this again.

Thank you! I've been looking for this recipe forever! I had the cookbook this was in, but it has been lost in moves or misplaced. I love the recipe and have missed it! I like to double or triple this recipe and put it in the crockpot to cook all day. Thanks for helping me find a long lost, loved recipe!

I've not had this since I was a kid. It turned out really yummy, just like my mom used to make. Only alterations were - I didn't have any celery so I used green pepper and I didn't have any tomato juice so I used a tin of chopped tomatoes and I made up some beef stock which I added as needed (every 10mins or so) to keep the stew moist while cooking.

A great starter for a great stew. I opted to add less ground beef and more barley for a healthier recipe. I also wanted more fresh vegetables, so I added some diced tomatoes and carrots and shredded cabbage. For a little more flavor, I added some cumin and left out the chili (we prefer the cumin taste to the chili). Great recipe!

This recipe was easy, quick and healthy. I used vegetable juice instead of tomato juice to sneak in some extra veggies for my family. I liked it because ist was easy and quick to prepare, my family liked it, and it was good for them.

Simple to make, uses very few ingredients, tasty too. I thought it tasted like "dressed up" tomato soup. My hubby described the flavor as spaghetti sauce... I won't make this again though, just wasn't suitable to our tastes.

My whole family loved this recipe! I added some cheese to each serving, and it was like a cheeseburger stew. Warm and hearty. I used 1/4 tsp of salt, and it could have used maybe a little spice, maybe try some italian seasoning next time. I will make this again- my family will insist on it!
