I hightly recommend this recipe for the sauce!! The first time I made this dish, I loved the taste of the sauce, but wasn't pleased with the final baked dish. So now I use this recipe for pasta sauce and serve it over shape pasta. I love the Italian sausage in place of ground beef in the sauce, and my husband always RAVES about the taste (he loves all the meat). My substitution were: adding minced garlic while sauteing the sausage and onions, using hot sausage or red pepper flakes to add some kick, and using chicken broth instead of white wine (don't ever have it on hand).
