Looking for an accompaniment to Mexican food or barbecued chicken? This spicy rice fits the bill (the sour cream is handy for cooling your palate!). When I'm cooking, I head for my spice cupboard often - we like our food zesty!

As a new bride, I knew how to make scrambled eggs and bran muffins. Unfortunately, you can only live on love for so long. My dear husband held his tongue and ate the many flops that come with being a beginning cook. Many years later, I'm secure in the kitchen, and my family enjoys my cooking. This hearty dish even passes the test for teenage boys.--Glenda Schwartz, Morden, Manitoba

My recipe uses a product native to the north-central United States, wild rice. Wild rice is not a rice at all, but rather a grass seed. It was a staple in the diet of the early American Indians and remains a favorite today because of its crunchy texture. This dish is especially good served with poultry.

A fun and tasty alternative to potatoes, this savory rice is a popular side dish at gatherings. I especially like its mild soy sauce flavor and flecks of green onion and toasted slivered almonds. -Annette Rodgers, Rosston, Arkansas
