I loved this stew. Made the recipe per directions except that I omitted the bread and used flour instead of tapioca. I baked it for 1 hour and 30 minutes in a 9 x 13 pan. This is a wonderful stew.

This was so good. I kind of tripled the recipe by adding, three pounds of beef, one two pd. bag of baby carrots, three pd. bag of red potatoes, one bag of frozen peas. and one onion soup mix [dry]. Kept the one can of tomatoes. Put it in my Dutch Oven and baked at 425 for 2 1/2 hours. Give or take. Wounderful.

Very good beef stew recipe! TBH, I didn't notice the bread cubes in the final product, so could probably do without it; also, I subbed cornstarch and it worked out just fine. Husband declared it a success for my first homemade beef stew.. saving this one for "the book."

I didn't have tapioca so I substituted cornstach instead. I also added frozen peas, frozen broccoli florets, and frozen green beans I had hanging around in my freezer. In addition to the 1 cup of water I also added 1 cup of V-8 type vegetable juice, which added to the liquid (gravy?) content and the flavor. It came out perfect. This is now my husbands #1 favorite!! Mine too, for that matter...

I must have missed something because this was at best bland.

Just like mom used to make, but with less nagging and worrisome banter.

I've been using this recipe for years. It does take a little time to chop all of the vegetables, but it is well worth it! The one thing I like is that I don't have to stand over the stove ensuring the stew doesn't stick to the bottom. I would highly recommend this stew to anyone who likes stew with a roasted, not boiled, flavor.

Best stew I've ever had and my kids loved it too. I added some of my own things on top of the recipe. Worchester sauce, onion soup mix and replaced the tapioca with Wondra, and added 1 can of corn to the recipe.

This is a great recipe, and even better after I modified it! I too used corn starch instead of tapioca, omitted the sugar and the bread, and this time used veal & stewed tomatoes instead of beef & diced tomatoes. Oh, and we had no carrots, so I went without. It was amazing! The veal was so tender and the stewed tomatoes really added to the dish! And my husband loved it even more this way-Enjoy!

Wasn't as juicy as the Yankee Pot Roast that takes just as much work and time to make. Adding 2 tbls. of Worcestershire sauce probably wouldn't hurt.

I've been making this recipe for several years. During the last 15 minutes of baking, I add homemade biscuits to the top of the stew. Delicious!

I have used this recipe for years and we love it . For those who don't like onions I suggest you use onion powder or flakes instead of the fresh onion. I also use a spicy vegetable juice in place of the tomatoes (we like things spicy) the bread can be omitted for those who don't care for the feel of the wet bread. I also have made this is a slow cooker and I have used meatball instead of the beef cubes.

FANTASTIC! Very tasty and easy to make. I will definitely be making this dish again! We aren't fans of onions so we replaced the onions with corn and it worked out great.

With the exception of a couple mod's its the perfect stew coming from a person who never made a stew b4 this year! love it. The only mod's i've done is i use corn starch, add a little honey, soya sauce & brown sugar. As for veggies I like changing it up once in awhile and love to throw in water chestnuts, cauliflower, brocoli, etc etc. Great stew
