I made this exactly as written and thought it was good. Next time I would double the bacon and use half the amount of butter and flour. I think maybe those who were disappointed by the flavor were expecting something more like tomato soup. This is a chunky, cream-based chowder with a subtle tomato flavor.

I increased the servings to 8 and it turned out GREAT! I added some fresh basil and garlic and a touch of salt and pepper. Next time I make it, I may add a few more tomatoes. It was wonderful with a grilled cheese sandwich. Perfect for a cold and stormy day!

I really enjoyed this soup. I made it according to the recipe and found that the flavor was a little too weak, so I added some Italian herbs and an extra 1/2 cup of tomatoes. It turned out really good!

We enjoyed this thoroughly, but must share our additions/changes. We have a gluten allergy in the house, so we naturally substituted GF flour mix for the all-purpose flour. We also added a bit of corn, salt, pepper, oregano, thyme, sauted onions and a little bit of the leftover bacon grease. I know it's terrible, but we only had cheap bacon so most of the flavor was GONE after cooking it. Also used organic 2% milk and some ricedream instead of half and half since that was what we had on hand. It seems to be a very flexible and delicious recipe! Thank you!!! The chowder was a huge success and we plan to make it again and again, as well as trying it out as a freezer meal.

I have made this soup several times and today I did again but I didn't have half/half so I used whole milk & evaproated milk, please if you can, use half/half, it just gives it a better texture to me, the whole milk with evaprorated milk gives it a grainy texture to me.

I love this soup! I won my works Recipe Olympics contest with this recipe. I love bacon so I add a couple more strips of bacon then listed in the recipe. It's super easy to prepare and is very filling on a cold South Dakota winter's night.

I added half an onion sliced. It was very easy and you get so much more than expected from the time you spent on it. I also used milk instead of half-and-half and it was creamy enough for me.

The bacon gives this soup an interesting soup. I used one can of Rotel tomatoes and one can of regular tomatoes so it was a tad bit spicy, but good. I think I added too much 1/2 and 1/2 so then I threw in a small can of tomato sauce. Served with grilled cheese sandwiches. Yummy!
