I added half an onion sliced. It was very easy and you get so much more than expected from the time you spent on it. I also used milk instead of half-and-half and it was creamy enough for me.

The bacon gives this soup an interesting soup. I used one can of Rotel tomatoes and one can of regular tomatoes so it was a tad bit spicy, but good. I think I added too much 1/2 and 1/2 so then I threw in a small can of tomato sauce. Served with grilled cheese sandwiches. Yummy!

Love this soup!! We had it with BLT's for supper tonight. My husband is not big tomato soup person and he ate 2 bowls! I did add the whole can of tomatoes and more bacon with a touch of salt and pepper. So quick and easy, nice way to take the chill off your bones on a cool Fall eveing!!

This had a really good flavor. I doubled the recipe, but used a whole pound of bacon, and 2 28oz. cans of diced tomatoes. I didn't double the cream mixture, though and it was still a great consistency. When I make this again, I'm not going to use canned diced tomatoes, we didn't like the flavor of them. I'll probably take the extra time to peel and dice fresh tomatoes..I think it will be worth it.

This is just okay. I made it as specified, but after tasting it I added more tomatoes as suggested by others and eventually even added some tomato sauce. It just didn't have a lot of flavor and I found myself adding garlic salt and other things trying to get it to taste better. I think I'll try a different one next time.

This is a great idea that doesn't quite hit the mark without (at least) doubling the tomatoes. We enjoyed it very much after some tweaks, but there are several chunky tomato soups on this site that would take this idea and roll with the addtion of bacon. Tomato Bisque III comes to mind, since I've made it and garnished it with bacon already. A tiny bit more effort is totally worth it. Thanks for the recipe, anyway! :)

My husband made this for me tonite, first time he's made soup not from a can. VERY yummy!! He doubled the recipe so we would have leftovers for lunch, it turned out great. He used a pepper bacon, cause that's all we had and it gave a nice little kick. I think next time we will put a tablespoon of tomato paste to give it some more tomato flavor, will keep you updated on the change. This one is a keeper :)

I calculated this to make for 7 people and I followed the recipe to a T but came out with a tasteless pot full of flour broth. I had to add a ton of salt and nutmeg, an extra can of tomatoes and it STILL didn't taste good. I resorted to adding a can of Campbell's Tomatoe Soup! I should have just had that in the first place and then I wouldn't be out all these ingredients. Won't make this again.

Awesome!! We LOVED this! Perfect for a chilly night! I tried to follow the recipe exactly except for adding sauted onion cooked in bacon drippings. I didnt have quite enough tomatoes so I substituted one small can of tomato paste. Great tomato flavor. Very comforting meal with a grilled cheese sandwich. This will be served from my kitchen many times. :)Thanks Heidi for the great recipe!

This was a fantastic soup! I took the advice of a previous "chef" and added more tomatoes! Each and every savory bite was full of tomatoes. Thanks for the winner!! :)

Very good basic recipe! My husband loved it for lunch with a grilled turkey and cheddar sandwich. I made a couple of changes based on what I had. Used 2% milk instead of half-and-half, and used fire-roasted tomatoes (a whole 14.5 oz. can). Next time I would use a few more strips of bacon and add sauteed onion like others suggested. Will definitely make again!

My husband and I LOVED this soup! I added a little extra bacon and onion, and served it in bread bowl made from onion kaiser rolls. I will not only make this again for my family, but plan to serve it at a dinner pary. Thanks!!!

I make this chowder often but after I brown the bacon I save the grease and brown one small onion diced and also add to this one large can of tomato sauce and add apx 2T. sugar and crumble the bacon in the soup when I serve it. I use apx. 1 t. ham stock or 1/2 t. liquid smoke and top it off with cracked pepper and use milk instead of cream I don't need anything to thicken it and it's awsome

I liked this soup a lot and found it easy to make but thought it needed more tomatoes and bacon. I added the rest of the 2nd 14.5 oz. can of diced tomatoes I was using, plus cooked up 4 or 5 more strips of bacon. I think next time, I would use one can of Italian diced tomatoes. Tastes better the second day.
