I PREPARED THIS EXACTLY TO THE RECIPE, AND THE BACON AND FRENCH BREAD CROUTONS DID NOT MAKE THE SOUP TASTE LIKE A BLT SANDWICH TO ME AT ALL. AFTER COOKING THIS ONCE; NEXT TIME I'LL ADD SMALL DICED POTATOES, AND BROWN THE BACON WITH THE ONIONS & CELERY. FOR ME THIS IS JUST A NICE TWIST ON A TOMATO SOUP. I LIKE OTHERS WAS A LITTLE LEERY OF THE COOKED LETTUCE, BUT THE TASTE WAS FINE. SINCE THE RECIPE MAKES ALMOST A GALLON, I SEPARATED WHAT WE COULD EAT FOR ONE MEAL AND ONLY PUT THE LETTUCE IN WHAT WAS SERVED. I WILL WAIT TILL I REHEAT FOR ANOTHER MEAL TO ADD MORE LETTUCE AGAIN.

This was delicious. I thought it was better than a Panera soup. You can put in other vegetables...I put in chopped sweet peppers and a can of peas. I only used half the butter with the bread and they tasted delicious. I did not add lettuce at the end. Next time I will only make 1/2 a pound of bacon...just because we didn't need all that bacon!

Reluctant to try it because of the letttuce. But I made the soup today. I love it.

I cut the butter and oil down by to one and a half tablespoons butter/one tablespoon olive oil because I already had premade homemade croutons and I sauteed the vegetables in that instead of the bacon drippings only to cut down on the calories where I could. I did throw in a few cloves of minced garlic. I only needed a couple tablespoons of flour and I did not add the sugar. I used organic vegetables, chicken broth, salsa and tomato sauce and turkey bacon instead of regular bacon. I liked this soup, though I did add in a little more spice (onion powder, garlic powder, a little basil and a little hot pepper sauce) after tasting it. I only used a little homemade spiced croutons on top because I'm watching my carb count. It's a good cold-weather soup. I'll make this again.

Our family loves to eat hot soup for dinner fairly often in the cold winter months and I am always on the look out for unique, but flavorful soup recipes. This one definitely fits the bill! I will admit that I was a little leery about the lettuce (just seemed like a strange ingredient for soup), but I was pleasantly surprised. I followed the recipe exactly as written (I did use medium Pace picante which gave it a kick) and everyone in our family loved it. Best of all, it was extremely easy to make and the most time consuming part of the whole recipe was frying all the bacon. We will definitely have this again.

I had this as an appetizer at Walt Disney World's Sci-Fi Drive In (at Hollywood Studios) and LOVED it! Then, I found the recipe in one of my Taste of Home cookbooks and have made it several times! Definitely a favorite!

I pureed with immersion blender and added 1/2 cup half and half. I halved the recipe as well. Used avocado instead of lettuce. Then it was good.

This was really good. Hubby doesn't care for fresh tomatoes but loves the salsa and lettuce has never done much for me but I LOVED it in this soup. I put mine in after I dipped my bowl out and it gave it a wonderful crunch. I was very impressed with this. Thank you!
