Wow, i can't say enough about this recipe. i left the nuts out, can't eat them. They were so good my grandson almost ate them all, my daughter HAD to take them to work so i had to make a triple batch for her! You have to make these!

I'm really giving this recipe four and half stars. My batch of bars baked pretty quickly, so keep a watchful eye on these. Because mine baked a little sooner than instructed, they were probably a little drier than most others, not really being 'gooey' as some have claimed. But they had an excellent flavor and definitely have the potential to be a five star recipe (so long as I keep my eye on them, haha). I didn't have any nuts on hand so baked them without which turned out to be fine because they were almost like coffee cake. I think I would make a thicker sugar topping next time to get more of that coffee cake feel to this recipe. I did add more apples that what was called for simply because I like lots of 'stuff' in all of my desserts. They were a little moist the next day after I covered them with foil and let them rest overnight. I enjoyed a piece with a glass of red wine this eventing. Delishious :-)

These bars taste even better the next day. I followed the recipe exactly except I omit the nuts due to a friend's allergy to them. The consensus is in--they're delicious!

These were a very yummy treat, but with a few changes, they could be 5 star! I made the recipe exactly as stated. They really are PLENTY sweet without even adding the sugar topping. I added it, but it just seemed to kind of bake into the top of the bars - no real topping. Next time I will definitely totally leave off the sugar topping, and probably even drop the white sugar in the bars down to 1/4 cup. The spice and apple tastes are so delicious, you really don't need all of the excess sweetness. The only other change I would make is to increase the apple amount, and be sure to chop them into very small pieces so that you don't end up with sort of mushy big chunks in your finished product. Overall, a tasty recipe to try, and a great addition (with changes!) to my collection - Thanks!

Dynamite! As per other reviews, I did add 1 cup of apples. Omitted the nuts, because I didn't have any on hand, but next time I think I'll use pecans. I followed the recipe exactly except for the amount of apples, and I do think that the sugar amount could be scaled back a bit. Next time I'll do the 1/2 cup of brown sugar and only 1/4 cup of white. I also scaled WAY back on the topping, cooked it in a round, stoneware pan, and boy these turned out wonderfully. A keep for sure!

YUM!!! I read the reviews before I made this so I used 2 cups of chopped apple instead of 1/2 cup, and used about half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture, and no nuts because I don't like nuts. It was awesome! My daughter ate 2/3 of this cake tonight. I will be making it tomorrow. There is a home-tasting party company that has a mix that tastes EXACTLY like this cake. I will never order one of those again! Thanks so much BarbiAnn for the great recipe.

These are definately a keeper! I doubled the recipe, cut back on the sugar and added a little bit more apple. Then I just sprinkled a little cinnamon and sugar on top. Delicious!

Great recipe, although I did make a few changes. My kids don't like nuts so I left those out and increased the apples. Also for the topping, I combined about a half cup flour, a couple of tablespoons of butter, 1/4 cup of sugar and 1/4 tsp of cinnamon. I spread this over the top and baked. Outstanding!

Excellent treats. Turned out very moist and flavorful. Filled my house with a wonderful apple, cinnamon smell that brought my neighbor over to see what I baked! I did double the recipe and made a 16x9 size pan. I also added a 1/2 tsp each of cloves and nutmeg. Really kicked up the flavor. Will definitely make again!

I just finished baking these and they turned out pretty good. I had to bake 10 minutes extra since the inside was still moist when I cut into it. I didn't use the nuts, but instead doubled the apples. I also exchangd the vanilla for almond. I got a little taste of the outside before I had to put it back in the oven and it seemed pretty good. I also used about 2/3 the sugar and cinnamon that the recipe called for. All-in-all I think it turned out well. I'm bringing it to my sister's for dessert tonight, so hopefully they'll agree!

I used half the sugar and doubled the apples (granny smith) as others have suggested. Very good texture and taste I had to taste test when they came out of the oven to make sure they were ok:)!)-- I looked at the recipe about 4 times to make sure I was not omitting liquid because of how thick the batter is. I baked them in an 8" square pan and also omitted the topping as we are planning to eat them with ice cream on top!!

Added more chopped apples and trimmed back the white sugar for a more flavorful and less sugary treat. Allow for more baking time if you double the recipe like I did.
