This is really good apple pie. Didn't come out runny at all like so many other recipes that I've tried have. I was afraid that it might be too sweet, but it wasn't at all. Very tasty.

I made this for Thanksgiving... For all of you that are raving about this pie and it being the best you ever had... I want to know what you were eating before... Don't get me wrong it was OK, but just OK nothing special about it... I did like everyone else and mixed the syrup with the apples and then poured the extra over... I used 4 granny smiths and 4 gala apples... It was good... but just average... nothing special in my eyes!

This was really good. I made it for Thanksgiving. I used 6 apples and that was way to much, also did what others did mixed the syrup mixture with the apples before putting it in the crust and with the cinnamon and nutmeg along with vanilla. I did however had to make more of the syrup I don't know if it was something I did wrong or that the apples were soo big. I bake it for 40 mins at 350. It was really good everyone loved it,will make again at xmas

I made this pie for thanksgiving today and have already been hounded by all my Aunts and cousins for the recipe! I did take a few reviewers advice and added a teaspoon of vanilla (and in turn removed a teaspoon of water) and I also added 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. I mixed the apples with the filling prior to putting them in the pie crust, and saved a little filling to brush the top of the lattice, also I baked at 350 the entire time and it came out perfect. Talk about AMAZING!! Many of my family members said it was the best apple pie they had ever tasted. Thank you so much for sharing this gem with us, and also the history behind it, rclyma, your review had me in tears, having lost my grandmother this year it really hit home-I of course used my Grandma Ware's pie crust, so it was the perfect representation of her at our first thanksgiving without her. Thanks again, and god bless!

My first apple pie and it was a treat for everyone! I modified the recipe just a smidge. I add 1tsp of vanilla and a sprinkle of cinnamon to the syrup. I used 4 small granny smith, 1 large braeburn and 1 large ambrosia apple. I used egg wash on top crust and then put the rest of the glaze, which I kept intact minus for decorate slits. Everyone raved about it. It was divine and a total keeper. My grandmother approves...delish and beautiful.

I made close to recipe with a few exceptions. I used Miracle Pie Crust and crumbled it on top and didn't pour juices over the top, also added one tsp. cinnamon. Used 4 large granny smiths, turned out perfect, no bubbling over.

My husband says this is awesome - the only problem is that the bottom crust kind of melts into the pie, so it's almost indiscernible! Next time I will pour the butter/sugar mix into the pie BEFORE I do the lattice crust, and reserve a bit to pour over the crust for effect. The other way was too messy.

I tried this for the first time and know why it's been getting 5-star ratings...it's the best apple pie recipe I've come across. I used Red Delicious red apples rather than Granny Smiths and added some cinnamon and lemon juice. I also inadvertently poured the butter/sugar sauce in with the apples rather than over the top,but it's came out fantastic! I'd like to try this recipe again by pouring it OVER the top crust like the recipe said just to compare. For the crust, I used "Ruth's Grandma's Pie Crust" recipe from this site and that too turned out to be a winner (5 stars!) I've never come across a pie crust recipe that called for an egg/water mixture to go IN the dough but that must have made the difference...the crust was very flaky and delicious! I'm definitely going to keep these 2 recipes for future use...5 star rating all the way.

Fantastic pie! I added extra cinnamon and nutmeg (about 2 tbs each) along with a tablespoon of vanilla to the syrup and it caramelized beautifully with the apples. My friends call it "caramel apple pie", and it tastes as good as it sounds! It's also very versatile.. I've made it with fresh pie crust and lattice top, store-bought pie crust with whole top, and graham cracker crust with streusel topping and it ALWAYS comes out beautifully!

I was looking for an apple pie recipe for Thanksgiving, came across this one, and decided to do a test-run for my room mates before actually making one for my family. I'm proud to say, this was a huge hit; even my room mates who said they hate apple pie enjoyed this! Go with the alterations suggested by others, add 1 tbsp of vanilla, and adding in dashes of cinnamon and nutmeg to make this really pop. Also, as sort of my own twist, while making the crust, I added cinnamon and nutmeg to the dough. I'd also suggest to pouring in the syrup before you put the lattice on top. if you pour the syrup over the lattice crust, the crust becomes almost rock hard. I have and will continue using this recipe, it's so easy to follow, so easy to make, and so incredibly delicious. If only my own grandmother could devise a recipe like this.
