I just made this for the first time yesterday (my very first pie too) and WOW! I was having people over for dinner and this was dessert. Everyone thought it was great. I used Granny Smith apples, and added a little more flour to the apple mix (as others suggested here) I also doubled the crumb mixture and I'm glad I did. Thank you for making me look like I know what I'm doing, lol. ;)

I left out the walnuts & raisins, and this was a good apple pie, just not the best I've had. The crumble didn't crisp up much for me, and (believe or not!) I thought it was a little too sweet. I still managed to eat 2 pieces--all in the name of research, of course.

This was really good and easy. I skipped the raisins and nuts as it was for my daughters class for her Thanksgiving lunch. If you like your apples soft, cut them thin and they will soften up nicely.

I think this was the best apple pie we've ever eaten. The next day my husband was asking if we could make another. I said "we"? He said, "well, I'll buy the apples"! Thank you for sharing this delicious recipe!!

The ingredients were simple. I used the optional walnuts and used dates instead of raisins. The six cups of apples made a huge mound inside the pie shell but luckily it didn't burst or leak. Turned out wonderful! Maybe a little too sweet, but everyone else thought it was perfect. It baked much longer than suggested.

This recipe never fails me. My boss and others have even told me that this apple pie is better than those made by their mothers. One nifty thing I like to do with this recipe is add another pie crust (from scratch) on top of the crumb topping. I like this recipe for the "Basic Flaky Pie Crust" - http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Basic-Flaky-Pie-Crust/Detail.aspx

I really enjoyed making this pie! First apple pie I've tried and it was so quick and simple. Although I did double the flour and the cinnamon. Will make again!

Amazing! Got rave reviews when I took it to share with our Young Married's group. I used Golden Delicious apples and doubled the crumb topping. One suggestion - be sure to put something under this while it's cooking...it was so juicy it spilled over into the oven!

this restored my confidence in baking. my baking attempts are always a failure. but when i tried this recipe, i made a successful pie. it was delicious and so easy to make. my mom loves it. i didn't use raisins or walnuts, just plain cinnamon and nutmeg. i doubled the measurement for the crumb mixture to completely and overfill the top of the pie. love it!

This is a delicious recipe. I like it because it has relatively few ingredients. My trick: cut the apples into tiny slivers. It makes the pie more moist, juicy, and tender, and more fully coats each apple slice.

Excellent recipe. But, the first time I made it using freshly sliced apples, it came out extremely watery and ran everywhere. When I made it again, I first par-boiled the apples (1 1/2 minutes in boiling water, then a cold water bath to cool them), then I laid them on a cookie sheet lined with paper towels to drain. (By the way, if you want to freeze your orchard-fresh apples for pies, treat them with Fruit Fresh first and then do them this way as well and then pack in freezer bags) Came out perfect! Not watery, stayed together when sliced--amazing! I did not add the nuts or raisins, as my boys don't like them. Thanks for the recipe!!

Added caradmon, skipped the raisins, and included oates in the crumble topping. I used Granny Smiths, and it was still really sweet. I think next time I'll use less brown sugar in the crumble. It came out great and got rave reviews!

I'm not into raisins at all but my husband loves them so I added them and to my surprise it was delicious... I only used 5 cups of apples and I still had leftover filling... it was a bit sweet so next time will probably use granny smith instead of red apples as suggested... WILL ADD THIS ONE TO MY COLLECTION. THANKS FOR SHARING!
