So yummy!!!! I added a big spoon of quick cooking tapioca also so that it wouldn't come out runny...which my pies have been doing lately....came out perfect!

This was a delicious pie, yum.... However, the crumb topping was soft and mushy the next day. I recommend eating this pie on the day you bake it.

Had a lot of Empire apples on hand so I decided to make this pie so not to let them go to waste - very easy to make however my family found this to be to sweet next time will try different apples and cut sugars back some - vanilla ice cream on top a plus for this.

I make this recipe every Thanksgiving and everyone loves my pie. I do use more crumb topping because I use 1c flour, 1c brown sugar and 6 TBS butter, and it is scrumptious. This is my once a year homemade apple pie standby.

Great Great recipe! I made it for my boyfriend and he ate the whole thing! He loved it so much I ended up making a second one for him the next day! I used 6 medium sized apples, 4 Granny Smith and 2 Golden Delicious, to get a little different texture and taste for the pie. I made 1 and 1/2 of the crumb topping. Doubling the topping would be too much. My changes to the recipe: I used 1/2c of white sugar and 1/4c of brown sugar for the filling. After mixing the apples with the sugar and spices, let it sit for a few minutes. Some of the liquid will be pulled out of the fruit and you can drain it off. I also added about a 1/4c of white sugar to the topping and baked it under the broiler at 525degrees for the last 5 minutes of baking time. This helped get a nice topping that won't get soggy. Be sure to slice the apples thinly and to a uniform size or else they won't cook correctly. Cool it for 30minutes-1 hour to allow it to set properly. I'll be making this pie again this weekend!

Oh my gosh!! What a wonderful pie. This was the first apple pie I've ever made and boy was it a hit! I used a homemade pie crust, you can find it here under easy pie crust. I highly recommend it. It makes enough for the crumble on top which I added brown and white sugars, cinnamon and pecans. Everyone raved about the pie and I will make over and over again!

Do not make this if you are on a diet! It's the most amazing apple pie you will have ever tasted. I did make a few changes based on what I enjoy in an apple pie. I doubled the flour in the mix with the apples and no problems with it being runny even when warm and because I used pastry that I made at home, I sprinkled 1/2 tblpn of extra flour on the bottom of the pastry shell like my Dad taught me, plus a sprinkle of Chinese Five Spice which has cinnamon, anise, fennel, ginger, licorice root and cloves. I also added a tablespoon of this spice to the apples. I didn't use the optional walnuts or raisins and this pie was the best pie I have ever tasted! I sliced the apples very thinly. I served it with thickened cream - KEEPER!!

I made this pie Thanksgiving of 2006 and just found it in my recipe box! Everyone loved it with a few changes I made based on other reviews. I added 2 T. of flour to the coating and used dried cranberries instead of raisins, Yum!! I also left out the walnuts since I don't like them and nobody was complaining :o)

This pie was excellent! I had an extra pie crust, but just one, and some apples I didn't think I was going to use in another recipe, so I wanted to make an apple pie. I selected this recipe due to the alternative to an upper pie crust. I ended up using a spice mix given to me by a friend (in a gift set from Crate and Barrel) as I didn't think that the spices in the recipe would be sufficient. I didn't add any of the optional ingredients either. This is a classic pie with a twist that turned out wonderfully!
