This recipe was delicious! I make a few modifications that worked really well. Instead of grating the apples I chopped them small. I halved all the ingredients for the sauce, added the remaining chopped apple pieces, and instead of using half-and-half I used a few splashes of Port wine. My family LOVED it and gobbled it up. Awesome recipe!

I live in Slovakia and this cake is a major HIT with Slovaks and Americans alike! I've made it a ton of times, but yesterday chanced the butter sauce a bit. I finely cut up an apple, with its peel. I threw in some milk and just enough water to cook these apple pieces until they were soft. I also put in 2 "pats" of butter and sprinkled the mixture in the pot with some sugar. At the end when the apples were almost just a sauce, i added a vanilla pudding small box and mixed it in until it was smooth. After the cake cooled just a bit, I put this "sauce" on there...oh my, but it was superb! Thanks for the great recipe!!!

I have been making this for years, we love it! I do cut back on the sugar a bit. I also just dice the apples. I find that I usually have to add some milk to the batter to get it to cover the apples. Be careful as the top gets brown but it may not be totally cooked yet. You must do the toothpick test with this one! I use cream cheese frosting, but will definitely try the butter sauce next time!

Delicious! Great way to use apples. Didn't try the sauce. It stayed very moist (even though it was thoroughly baked).

Delicious and sweet. Next time I would only use half the butter sauce. Definitely would need some tea with this flavorful cake.

I didn't make the butter sauce, but this was so good without it! It must be 5 + stars with the butter sauce. I didn't have the right pan, so I made cupcakes/ muffins instead.

very easy to make and everyone liked it, even my husband who is not a fan of apples. I did not make the sauce because I ran out time before my guests arrived. I used maple cream spread on the top instead.
