I used a premade crust and doubled the topping. The pie is gone in one night! Sooooo good.

This pie provided a very different taste and texture, but it was most welcome and delectable! There's nothing too special about the crust, but since it was more bland, it definitely helped cancel out some of the sweetness provided by the butterscotch topping. Using tart apples (such as Granny Smiths) also contributed to the perfect balance of sweet and tartness this pie has. Instead of doing two small pies as suggested, I used a regular 9 inch pie pan, and the proportions of ingredients as calculated by this site was the perfect amount. I actually used 5 apples instead of 4, and there was ample filling left over for a second pie. The delicacy continues...

When making the filling: use light brown sugar, half and half, 1/2 stick butter, 1 tsp of vanilla, lil lemon juice, cinnamon and cornstarch. I use 6 to 7 apples. The butterscotch is so good! I don't like crumb texture in a apple pie. I like my apple pie to be like a cobbler doughy inside.

This was FANTASTIC! The only thing I changed was I used a frozen pie crust and doubled the topping. Excellent!

Turned out well, I did make my own homemade crust. I have made this several times. If you would like an alternative, last time I made it using the NEW hershey cinn. chips..boy was that good!

I have been making a similar recipe for years, since finding it in a Nestle cookbook. I always buy a ready made frozen crust, so I can't comment on the crust portion of this recipe. The rest of it is fabulous. It is great for kids and people that don't like oatmeal and/or nuts in their cumble toppings. The topping can be very sweet so be sure to use tart cooking apples not sweet ones. Also be careful to watch the pie once you put the topping on because it can burn rather easily.

I tried this because I was looking for an apple pie without a crust top(ran out of Crisco making the bottom!) Like the first person who tried this I made a larger portion. I used the servings calculator for an 8 serving pie. I also used my own crust (Basic Flaky Crust from here). The filling was perfect but the topping I will half the next time, just a little too much. Over all though we all really like this including my husband and out 2 guests! I will make this again as I loved the butterscotch with the apples and not having to deal with a crust top.

I'm probably not the best person to first review this recipe because I made many modifications, but here goes. First, I used my own favorite crust recipe rather than the one listed here, and I made it for a 10" pie since I don't have the small pie plates. For the 10" pie, I used about 5 medium to large-sized apples and then doubled the remaining ingredients (except for the cinnamon - I used 1 t. because my family likes it). I also doubled the topping ingredients. The pie smelled wonderful while baking! When I pulled it out to top with the butterscotch, the apples appeared a bit dry, so I drizzled them with melted butter before sprinkling with the topping. The end result was very tasty - not the very best apple pie recipe on this site, but delicious nonetheless. My children really liked it.
