Great for beginners like me. I also made it with 4 cups whole wheat and 2 cups bread flour. It turned out great. Oven baking worked better for me than my bread machine (but that could just be the breadman machine that I used.)For my personal taste I will use only half the sugar next time.

This was the first bread I've ever made, and it is simply delicious! The recipe was easy to follow, too. I would recommend this to everyone!

This bread was really good, kind of sweet but still really good. I just need to figure out how to shape a loaf, other than that, perfect.

I made it as directed the first time, but now I sub in 2/3 c. oats for some of the flour, trade the sugar for honey (1/4 c.), and use butter instead of oil. It's pretty sweet as written, but I like my bread sweet.

I cannot say enough about how good and simple this bread is. The first time I made it at home for my family and they loved it!! I read the reviews and reduced the sugar to 1/3 cup and made half the bread into a loaf, half into rolls. I personally did not eve notice the sugar. The second time I made this bread with my preschool class. They had a great time mixing an kneading by hand!! This time I used the full 2/3 cup of sugar and we made the entire thing into rolls. It turned out beautifully brown and soft. But I think that was too much sugar as it was a little bit too much on the sweet side. Next time I will play with it to see what is the perfect sugar amount for me. Thank you for a wonderful recipe!!!

I really really wanted to give this 5 stars, but I didn't follow the recipe as written. Like many others, I reduced the sugar down to 1/4 cup, and it was the perfect amount. I brushed the loaves with butter before and right after baking, which made for a really delicious crust. I also put a pot of steaming water on the lower rack, as I do most times I make bread. This makes for a pretty, crisp crust. The only real issue I had was that it never rose above the pan. Still delicious though! We love it! **Just want to add- not sure if all the complaints of denseness are because of the amount of sugar, but I did reduce the sugar and my loaves turned out perfectly fluffy. Really great texture!

This was my first time making bread without the bread machine. I've always been intimidated by bread because of all of the rising and kneading. But I have to say that this was very easy! And the bread is SO GOOD!!! Will definitely make again!

The bread was heavy and sweet, nothing like my mother's/aunt's/grandmother's homemade bread. It did taste good, but it's not something I'll try making again.

This is wonderful bread! I did not change a thing. I first made it for my husband and son and they just gobbled it up. I then made it for a friend who loved it so much, she had me make it and put it in gift baskets that she was giving away. She got nothing but rave reviews back!

Wow, this recipe is simple and wonderful! I used all-purpose flour as I didn't have bread flour. I simply added 2 tbsp extra for every cup. Turned out great...thank you!

DELICIOUS! My husband is a Mennonite so his family always has fantastic baked goods, but he said this ranked right up there with them. I follow the recipe just as written and haven't ever found it too sweet. I've made it twice in 1 week -- it goes fast. YUM!

This a great recipe!. I made it last Sunday and it was excelent. Delicious taste. Like Trisha I used olive oil and I decresed the amont of sugar. It was not sweet enough but it was still great. I made it into rolls. One of my co-worker gave me 7 out 5. I will try next time adding more sugar and 1/4 of maple syrop or malt, then in the last minute of baking, I will butter the top of it to brown it, then add sugar on it. Simple DIVINE!

Pretty simple to make for a first-timer like me. I used olive oil instead of veggie oil since that's what I had on hand & it still tastes good. I'd use less sugar next time.
