I was trying to duplicate the friendhsip bread I rememebred from growing up, but I think I did something wrong, because I ended up with 6+ cups of starter instead of four. I stuck the extra in the freezer. The smell was right, but next time I will try another bread recipe.

I made this with regular sugar and flour and used soy milk. I think it turned out fine! The bread (I used Amish F'ship Bread I) doesn't need to bake as long as they say--still delicious though. Maybe try sifting flour and sugar together and mixing it with the milk before adding to starter!

Question, when you pass the one cup of starter on what information do you give them as to where to start?

Oh such a wonderful starter, and it takes five days less than most starters to begin cooking with. I took the Plain and Simple Sourdough recipie and added the Amish starter to it as well as 3 table spoons of sugar to the warm water and yeast mix (tradition method, no bread machine used). The bread came out tasting like Chalah bread! This one is a keeper in my reciepe book! I LOVE IT!!

I lost my recipe for this and I am so happy to have it back. It is a great way to get to know your neighbors; or to just pass to friend/family.

I was SOO sceptical about this recipe because whenever I opened up the ziploc bag that I mixed the ingredients in, the starter smelled sour and gross! I was so close to throwing it away because I thought that I must have messed something up, but I decided to just stick to it. I AM SO GLAD THAT I KEPT IT! THIS STARTER MADE THE BEST BREAD EVER! I used it with the recipe, Amish Cinnamon Bread, found on this website and gave it away to my mother-in-law. I also love that I can just freeze the leftover starter so I can make some yummy bread every weekend.

Hi - love this bread but has anyone tried it with perhaps Splenda and whole wheat flour? The calorie and carb count on this is pretty scary! I wonder if it would work (and taste as good!) by substituing healthier ingredients? Any ideas? Now that I check again this count "per serving" must mean the whole starter not per serving of bread after baked because the Amish Friendship Bread Starter I has a much better count per serving after being made with the same recipe of starter! Whew!!

Very good and easy to do. Years ago I had a starter going and in that recipe it told me to put the starter in a ziplock bag. This worked perfectly. On the days it said to stir, all I did was just mashed it with my hands. This time I did it again and I also wrote on the bag and that allowed me to keep track of the days. When I was done with that day, I would mark it off. I hope this helps.

Easiest starter to keep around for a wonderful and easy bread to make. I keep a starter going all the time, it makes the best bread around.

Best starter recipe I have tried. Easy and fun to make... and it smells sooooooo good! When milk is needed, I try it to be at room temperature, like sugar and flour, for I think it is better in order to create activity in the starter.
