Absolutely delicious! A hearty, full-bodied bread, and in my opinion as good as bread that takes hours to make, only much easier! The recipe is perfect as written. Make sure to use up the butter/buttermilk mixture by basting the bread a couple of times while it bakes, because it will make it taste and smell that much better! Postscript: I had a couple pieces this morning for breakfast, toasted, with apple butter. Yummy! I noticed it did develop more of a biscuity flavor after sitting overnight (wrapped in plastic).

Used butter instead of margarine. Otherwise followed this recipe exactly as written and it came out beautiful. Would highly recommend anyone to try it. My whole family loved it!! Next time I'm going to try substituting 1c whole wheat flour as others suggested.

I'd never had soda bread before so I wasn't quite sure if I hit or miss the mark. The bread was good. I added 1 cp raisins and about 2 tbsp carraway seeds. I also substituted 1cp wheat for white flour, but I think it was too dense. If you want to use wheat, maybe only sub in 1/2 cp. A good treat for my St. Patrick's dinner, though not something for raisin-haters out there.

Loved the taste, but as someone else mentioned - it seemed like too much flour. I ended up adding more buttermilk and that helped. Will try this one again one day!

Fantastic! It really is amazingly easy. I am a terrible baker but this bread came out perfectly. It was a big hit with my Guinness Stew. Thank you for the recipe!

This was the first time I made Irish Soda Bread. I came out fantastic, everyone loved it very much. I made the dough using my Kitchenaid like a few other have done, then I molded it with my hands into a round ball shape. I also found that is you cook the bread at 350* for 1hr 20 minutes it come out perfect. Thanx for the great recipe!

I tried this recipe as a last-minute addition to our annual St. Patrick's Day dinner. I am so glad we did! It was absolutely delicious--tastes like a huge, buttery, moist biscuit. Mmmmm... Next time I will be sure to be more diligent about basting the loaf with the butter/buttermilk mixture as it bakes. Mine got a little bit too crusty for our taste.

This was super fast and easy to make. I didnt have margarine so I used butter and crossed my fingers the oil content wouldnt be to much off. My bread did have to bake for a good 20 minutes longer. Next time I will either nake sure I have the right ingrediants or cover my bread earlier on and reduce the heat to keep it from getting to dark (I ended up trimming the bottom and sides but my oven isn't the greatest and I usually cover anything that will bake longer than 30 minutes). It was still moist and ever so slightly sweet. My kids didnt care for it even though I served it with honey butter from this site but it was really easy and tasty as far as soda bread goes.

Our family LOVED this recipe too. Didn't change a thing and it turned out great. I'll definitely be making this again before next St. Pat's and add dried cranberries. I will also try another reviewer's suggestion to use this for scones. Great idea!

I grew up in NC and consider myself a good southern boy, but I may never make biscuits again. I subbed butter for margarine in the dough, used raw sugar... and everyone in attendance thought it was great. Next time, I'll make biscuit shapes instead of a loaf. Can't wait to toast the leftovers with jam.

This soda bread was wonderful. The whole family loved it. I made it as written but used butter instead of margarine and baked in at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. This is not made with yeast so it won't have the texture of a "bread" but more like a biscuit. It's suppose to be like that.

I don't know how I did'nt see sugar in the recipe but I did'nt and so mine did'nt have any sugar!!It tasted like a giant moist buttermilk biscuit. I'm glad I did'nt add sugar . It was delicous with corned beef and cabbage. It makes wonderful toast the next day,

It was an excellent bread but the dough was very dry and crumbly once I was done with mixing...it took more than "slightly kneading" to get it to come together completely. Don't give up!

Good Bread! First time for making soda bread so I had nothing to compare it to. It looked like a big rough biscuit. I tried to make the x cut with a sharp knife but you really could not tell when it was done. I followed all the directions given but it did not look like the picture posted with the recipe. It's looks were definately deceiving.....it was very tasty!! A sort of dense bread with a little bit of sweet and tangy flavor. I will make this again and not wait for St. Patty's day next time.

The best Irish Soda bread I have ever had! Used butter instead of margarine (since its all I had), added 1/2 cup of raisins to the dough during the final stages in the Kitchenaid, upped the sugar to a little more than 1/4 cup, and added an extra splash of buttermilk. Didn't grease the cookie sheet but used parchment paper (which created a nice light brown bottom). Basted 3 times, sprinkling granulated sugar each time, over 55 minutes with the oven at 350. Produced the most beautiful bread that was moister than most breads I have had, but still with a biscuit texture and slightly sweet with a great crust! A favorite and keeper for sure!

I made this for St. Patties tonight. Cut the recipe in half and still had more than enough for a family of 4. This stuff is moist in the center and crisp and flaky on the outside. It had the delicate flavor of a country fair scone. I used powdered buttermilk and butter instead of margarine and it still turned out fantastic. I would definitely make it again.
