I have no concept of what Irish Soda Bread taste likes but I do know that this was very good. It does resemble a biscuit in a way. I added a handful of raisins to mine. I would agree that you don't need 1/4 cup of butter and buttermilk. Instead 2 tbs. should be fine. That reminds me... I didn't have Margarine so I used butter instead. Thank you for sharing this great recipe MP!

Delicious and very easy to make. Everyone liked it and the leftovers the next day with cheddar cheese melted on top were divine. I will definitely make this again - maybe adding some herbs on occasion - sage or rosemary would be good. Thanks for the great recipe!

Having never tried soda bread before I was a little surprised about how biscuitty this was. It was tasty and healthier than normal biscuits so I think this will become my new biscuit recipe.

first time making soda bread (although i read this isn't actually what the Irish call bread b/c of the egg and sugar)but we loved it. i made 3 loaves with my kitchen aid and added both golden and regular raisins to one. took 2 in for an office potluck and the raisin one was gobbled up in a few mins. BIG hit, will definate make again.

I made this for my Irish husband on St. Patrick's Day, and it was a HUGE hit. He's hoping we don'thave to wait until next St. Patrick's Day to have it again! This recipe is so simple and easy to make, yet it tastes like something fresh out of an awesome bakery. Thanks for sharing!

I guess this is good bread, I've never made Irish soda bread before though. It's more like a huge biscuit.

To enhance this recipe a tad, I added a handful of raisins and 2 teaspoons of caraway seeds. I also added less than 1/4 cup of buttermilk when mixing the dough to make it more moist. Finally, to sweeten it a little more, I added 2 Tablespoons of sugar (making it a total of 6 Tablespoons of sugar for the dough.) It may be just my oven but it took a little longer to bake - another 7 more minutes. Absolutely delicious!!!

Yum! This Irish soda bread really IS easy to make and it tastes superb! It's my favorite bread to make because it takes little prep time and cooks beautifully in the oven. I agree with other reviewers that this needs to be cooked longer with less heat. It gives the bread a great crusty exterior without burning the bottom.

This is the easiest, most delicious bread that can be made. There may be better breads out there in the world but definetly not this low maintenance. Just make sure to wrap in foil while it cools, otherwise, it won't be a moist and delicious as it should be.

I loved this recipe! It tasted great and it was incredibly easy to make. I did, however, have to modify a few things: -added 1/4C buttermilk (mixture was quite dry -added raisins & craisins -used butter in place of margerine (ALWAYS!)

My husband is from Ireland, so I was looking for a great Irish soda bread recipe for a traditional Irish dinner. I chose this one for my 1st try because they DON'T traditionally add rasins/currants or caraway seeds. He LOVED it and even said it was better than his grandmother's! I did use whole wheat flour instead of all-purpose flour, Smart Balance butter instead of margarine, and kneaded it in the big bowl I mixed it in. I think the key is brushing the loaf in the oven with the buttermilk/butter mixture several times. For my oven, I baked it at 325 degrees for 65 minutes (mine cooks about 25 degrees hot). It is supposed to have a pretty hard crust and be fairly dry - my husband always ate his with strawberry preserves. Cover with aluminum foil if it starts to get too brown. To serve, cut loaf into 4 quarters (or in half) and then cut each quarter (or half) into slices. I may try using brown sugar next time to make it even MORE authentic!

I make an authentic Irish dinner every St. Patricks day with lamb and potatoe leek soup(found on this sight)and this is by far the best soda bread recipe I've tried. I use real butter in the dough, and I cut it into the dry ingrediants with a pastry cutter, That's the only change and it comes out great every time- very moist.Great recipe!

This was really great and my husband and dinner guests really enjoyed it on St. Patrick's Day. I added raisins and we also loved the left-overs. It wasn't quite done in the center when the crust was brown, even when I had lowered the temperature and reviewers had suggested, but I think my oven runs hot, so I'll just lower it more next time.
