Instead of baking soda, I used bi-carb soda, and funnily enough the internet stopped whilst the picture was downloading, so I wasn’t sure how to shape the bread. I ended up using one of the new silicone cake / loaf bakeware from Woolworths. I used the traditional bake section on the oven, which slowed the fan right down and found that the bread took an hour and a half to cook. I topped the bread twice with the buttermilk and butter mixture. It rose beautifully, and I served it with an Irish Stew. It was the perfect accompaniment.

This is a very easy and delicious recipe for soda bread. If you do not have buttermilk on hand, you can add 1 tbsp of vinegar (I prefer cider vinegar) to a liquid meausring cup, and then fill it with milk to the desired mark. I also recommend flattening the dough a little, as it will cook quicker. The first time that I cooked this bread, I did not flatten it, and I had to bake it quite a bit longer. This is definitely a keeper!

This recipe is so easy & good with honey butter. The secret to cooking it is to cook it as it says but when you take it out of the oven you wrap it in a dishcloth immediately & the centre will finish cooking. I also use a cast-iron pan to cook it in. My mother-in-law learned this from her Irish mother-in-law & passed it on to me.

Excellent soda bread! I made it with Corned Beef and Cabbage from this site and it was a perfect accompaniment. Slightly sweet, just moist enough. Great recipe.

This bread is very tasty. It is a bit denser than I thought it would be. I might eliminate the sugar the next time that I make it so that it would pair up better with savory foods. I will definitely make it again.

This bread was very heavy and crumbly. Maybe that is what Irish Soda Bread is supposed to be though??

I am just not sure about this. I followed the recipe exactly and it was the driest, crumbliest dough, very hard to pull together. It was a very heavy dense bread, too. I just was expecting something different I guess! Still, it didn't turn out to be horrible, and it wasn't that bad.

While this is a very tasty recipe. I do have a couple corrections. The following quote is from the society for preservation of IRISH soda bread. "If your "soda bread" has raisins in it, it's not "soda bread," it's called "Spotted Dog" or "Railway Cake"! If it contains raisins, eggs, baking powder, sugar or shortening, it's called "cake", not "bread." Classic, true Irish Soda Bread consists of ONLY, 1-flour, 2- baking soda, 3- salt, 4-buttermilk 5-butter (small bit depending on your climate)and 6- Love. Now that is said, I will repeat, this IS a very, very tasty recipe, which I had to try for my own curiosity.

I love soda bread and make a really good one but decided to try this one as the reviews were great. I must say I was very disappointed. It had very little flavor and was too dense. It was also a little on the dry side. I think I'll stick with my normal recipe.

This recipe is by far the best of all the different soda bread recipes I have tried. It is so moist. I will always use this recipe for my soda bread from now on. The easiest by far also.

This was truly amazingly easy! This was my first time making Irish soda bread and this was the perfect recipe to get started with. I made two batches. One I made exactly as the recipe suggests and the other I wanted to be a bit like a scone so I added dried cherries to the dough and raw sugar to the top. Both where very good! My family will make this time and time again! Thank you for sharing!

I added a 1/2 cup of raisins, and it turned out great! I also tried reducing the butter by 1 Tbsp, but I feel like it actually needed the extra moisture for the kneading process. It stull turned out great, though. Thanks for the recipe!
