I used MacIntosh apples and I peeled, cored, and chopped them. I did use a total of 3 cups of sugars.Half and half amounts of brown sugar and white sugar and it was not at all too sweet, just yummy. I used 3 teaspoons of cinnamon, 1/2 teasponn each of salt, ground cloves and allspice. After cooking (covered) on high for 10 hours, I blended the mixture to a smooth consistancy and then cooked (uncovered) for about 1.5 hours. I was told by my husband that this is the best apple butter he has EVER tasted! Excellent recipe!

This is a very easy recipe to make. I made a few adjustments to my own tastes as suggested by others. Less sugar and less spice. I also filled the crock pot with apples to make a larger batch. Using my little salad oil battery operated whirler really helped turn the apples to a smooth sauce quickly and easily.

Great recipie, the spices are just perfect!!! I did cut the sugar down to 3 cups and used half brown and half white to add a little depth. Before the last step in taking off the lid I put it through the blender and this gave it the perfect texture, very smooth! Next time I'll try adding a few tablespoons of dark maple syrup, to give it a mapley taste. All in all it was a great recipie, I loved being able to leave it in the crock pot over night and the way it made my whole house smell wonderful! Thanks for sharing!!!

Really good and really easy,I did like other people said and did 2 cups white sugar and 2 cups brown, also added some vanilla. I'm making my 6th batch now... I have so many apples from my trees this year and this is helping me use them up fast!

I followed the directions exactly and was very pleased. It wasn't too sweet for my extremely tart apples. Very easy. I'm canning lots of it to use as Christmas gifts this year.

This was really easy to make and turned out very good. The apples don't have to be chopped up too small because they will cook down a lot. Next time I might use a little less cloves or cinnamon, or omit cloves completely.

Wonderful Recipe! I did like others and only used 1 cup white sugar and 1 cup brown. Increased cinnamon, omitted cloves, and added allspice and nutmeg. This one is a keeper.

Great recipe. I didn't give it 5 stars because it doesn't need the sugar. I used Macintosh apples and a 1/4 cup sugar.

This was my first time making apple butter & it turned out great. Per reviews I only added 2 cups sugar (1 cup brown 1 cup white). It wasn't too sweet at all. The only depressing part was how much it shrunk during cooking. My slow cooker was filled to brim in the beginning but by the end it was half full. I filled 5 eight ounce jars.

FIRST TIME TO MAKE APPLE BUTTER AND I WAS AMAZED. Before this recipe, I've only tried apple butter at Cracker Barrel and I was disappointed. Now that I've made this myself, I've changed my opinion about gross apple butter.

Awesome! The only thing I changed was I added 1/4 tsp nutmeg and cut the sugar down to 2 cups; 1 1/2 cups white sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar. I found I didn't have to cook it as long. Perhaps it was the type of apples. I just used the apples in my yard. My husband hates apple butter but loves this!

I followed the recommendations to use less sugar and my apple butter wasn't sweet. And even with tiny minced up pieces of apple it still seemed more like apple sauce than apple butter. I'll keep hunting...

I used Braeburn apples and left out the clove because I don't care for it. The apple sauce was absolutely delicious! My mother said it is was the best she ever had. It was a long process but well worth it.

The number of servings sounds overwhelming but it really isn't... Keep in mind they consider a serving to be the amount you'd spread on 1 piece of bread. I tried cutting down on the number of servings the first time I made this and was sorely disappointed with the outcome amount since the apples shrink so much in the process. Awesome recipe though. It also works fine if the sugar is replaced with Splenda (I used the same amount of it as was called for of sugar) for those with Diabetic dinner guests.
