This turned out pretty good. I cut the recipe in half because i was using a small crock pot. There is a lot of sugar in this recipe and next time i think i will reduce it. its just a bit too sweet. otherwise, great recipe.

I started this off in my slow cooker before I left for work. It smelled funky when I got home, like hot apple sauce which is...not a good smell. I let it cool down once it finished though and it is delicious! It's like having an apple pie on a piece of bread.

I have made this several times, and we love it! I usually use splenda(reducing the amount or it's way too sweet), and I took the one review idea of cooking it for almost 24 hours. My teen keeps me supplied in apples so I can keep her supplied in apple butter!

This recipe gets 4 stars as it is. 5 stars if you reduce the sugar. I think it really depends on how sweet your apples already are. The kinds I get from the supermarket are really sweet so I had to use my judgment on the amt to be used. Ended up putting in less than half the sugar called for and it was rather sweet so I will further reduce the sugar somemore the next time. I don't have a crockpot so I tried using my rice cooker (certainly beats stove top). Turned out great. I let it cook in there on two cycles (2hrs in total) and at the end of it all stirred it to make it smoother. At the end of the first cycle I couldn't resist and had some with ice cream. It tasted like apple pie filling. At the end of the second cycle though it gets a lot more concentrated and sweeter. Think I'll try it with cheese on toast. Thanks for a great recipe!

Fabulous! Also can be cooked stove-top, but much more labor intensive.

This is the first time I've even tasted apple butter but it sounded good so I made some. It is delicious! I love this recipe because I can put it in the crock pot and just leave it. I did put the it in my food processor after it had cooked down and then cooked it a couple of more hours. My parents also loved it and they keep reminding me that they are almost out :)

YUM YUM YUM! The whole house smelled yummy after making this. It took a few extra hours to finish than noted, but it turned out great! I used it in pumpkin pie and my boyfriend puts it on ham sandwiches, also great on pancakes! Thanks!!!

Super easy for a first timer! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because the sweetness was overkill. I only used 3 cups as opposed to the suggested 4 and it was still too much. The sweetness of the apple (I used half Granny Smith, half Fuji) plays a big role so I'd suggest tasting your apples before adding the sugar. I'll be making another batch tomorrow (holiday gifts this year) and will decrease the sugar to only a cup and a half. Additionally, I didn't need to cook near as long - only about 6 hours total. All in all, very pleased!

I have always loved store bought apple butter but I enjoy it even more homemade. I was given a basket full of apples from a friend so I had no idea how much they weighed. I guessed and added 2 cups of sugar. The sweetness was perfect but the texture was a bit heavy and sticky. Maybe I let it cook too long??? No matter. Spread on a slice of toast there is a wonderful freshness and fruitiness to it that you simply cannot get out of a jar at the grocery store. I have had this for breakfast every day for a week and I'll be having it until the container is empty.

Very good I will make again and again. I put the apples thur the food processer first I could then use it hot and not have to wait for it to cool blend and reheat. I do have to say the first time I made it I was overtired and multitasking and made it with 5 cups of apples not 5 lbs huge diffrience.

Awesome. I chopped the apple but next time would shred it. No big deal because I pureed it at the end and the taste was great.

This is a nice simple recipe. I have an apple slicer / corer / peeler that I use for this. The kids like to "help" and operate it. I do not peel them though. I cook according to directions, but then at the end I run the butter through the blender and it turns to a spread. This also takes care of the skins and the skins give it a deep color.

Such a great recipe to use up all those extra apples that your trees showered you with. So wonderful to freeze and take out and use in cakes, pies and muffins.

First time making apple butter. I followed directions exactly, except halfed recipe and forgot to adjust cloves so it turned out pretty dark and very spicy. My kids absolutely loved it though and were eating it like apple sauce. This can just be made to your own personal preference as far as spices. I even canned it which I've never done and that was pretty easy too. Just sterilized jars and lid and then gave it a 10 min. bath. Sealed up great. The halfed recipe gave me only 1 pint as it cooks down a lot. Will be making again for sure, thanks for the idea for gifts too!
