Directions

  1. Cut tea bags open and empty into a small bowl; discard tea bags.
  2. Bring water to a boil in a saucepan; add loose tea. Boil tea until water becomes dark red, 3 to 5 minutes. Stir sugar into tea.
  3. Grind cardamom seeds in an electric grinder or using a mortar and pestle. Stir ground cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger into tea; boil until flavors are infused, about 10 minutes.
  4. Stir milk into tea and bring back to a boil for about 2 minutes. Pour tea through a sieve to separate out solids. Serve hot.

  • Cook's Notes:
  • You can control the ratio of the water/milk by adding one more cup of water or one less. This is supposed to be a very sweet drink, so feel free to add more sugar if you want the very authentic version. You can use fresh ginger root (sliced) and cinnamon sticks if you wish but I find the powders deliver stronger flavors. For the tea, I use Lipton® yellow label tea bags.

I have this almost everyday except I use Al-kbous tea (finely ground). This can be found in most arabian food stores. I allow spices to simmer a bit longer before adding tea and simmer for a couple to three more minutes.I usually go for that dark amber color. Add evaporated milk and add more sugar if needed. You may prefer to use a fine hand-held strainer before serving. Traditionally it is served as is and the leaves just settle to bottom. Enjoy! And yes I agree.. it IS addictive because it is sooo yummy. Remember, you can make this however you want until it is juuuuust right. :)

This is beyond could become, it is addictive. I've done it more often without the tea to eliminate the caffeine factor and I like it just as much.
