Help! Went to buy extracts for hard xmas candy last night. Ran around for 4 hours looking for clove extract, apparently nobody here has heard of it, including Penzey's and they boast such a wide variety. Any ideas on making my own? I did find clove oil, $29.50 for .10 oz I could hire Martha Stewart to come make my candy at those rates, and we complain about gas prices? LOL. Thanks all! Happy Holidays!

If the recipe calls for extract, then I would make clove extract by soaking the cloves in vodka... That's kind of how you make vanilla extract.

look up "Homemade vanilla extract" on this site. Of course it takes awhile to get the flavor out... Have you eaten clove candy before?? I've never had it before... it sounds kind of weird (:

Yes, I grew up with Clove candy, you've probably eaten it many times during christmas and thought it was something else, which many people do. It's usually in the "old-fashioned" xmas candy mix. I make my own vanilla too, not sure if that'd work for cloves, probaby take awhile as they're pretty hard, but then again, they're also quite strong.

Did you try a Health food store? I see on the Internet it used for homeopathy...not sure if that would be the same but as long as it is made for internal use, at least it won't kill you(hopefully, LOL) Says they use it for toothaches...

Cindy mentioned clove oil for toothaches and it brought to mind that there is a product called Dent temp (not sure if that is exactly right) There is a small bottle of clove oil in it and you can get the product at almost any store. under $5.00

The health store is the place I found the oil for almost $30 for a teardrop amount. Not sure about the Dent Temp thing Rach, but I'll check it out later when I go BACK to the store. Cheers!

Hi chaplinj! Happy hard candy making. I don't know if you have time to order your stuff online, but you could check out www.getsuckered.com. They have all kinds of hard candy making supplies. That's where I finally ended up ordering my flavorings from. I don't remember if I saw clove flavoring there or not, but it's worth a shot!

I don't think you want to use clove oil in place of clove extract. Clove oil is what Novacaine is made out of. We use it for toothaches and it is STRONG stuff...it numbs everything it touches. Kind of late getting this in, but I thought I'd better warn ya! Good luck!!!
