kate is asking: (1 answer)
I'm planning on making Mrs. Siggs snickerdoodle cookie recipe from this site but was wondering if I can substitute self rising flour in place of the all purpose flour called for. Also could I leave out the cream of tartar?

The flour sub should be fine but a snickerdoodle isn't a snickerdoodle without the cream of tartar...

You're welcome, kate! Good luck! :) Cream of tartar really is what makes this specific cookie. :)

I use baking powder (which contains cream of tartar) when making that recipe and it would out great. Self rising flour already has a leavening agent added to it.

But it hardly has any, and the cream of tartar is used as much to add that specific flavor to a snickerdoodle as a leavening agent. Many snickerdoodle recipes call for 2t of cream of tartar. That's a significant amount when compared to how much is in each t of baking powder.

Thank you both for your input....hubby is picking up cream of tartar on his way home. Snickerdoodles are his favorite so he was willing to make an extra stop!

I also sub peanut butter for 1/2 of the shortening, gives it a much better flavor then just tasting Crisco.
