I am not resident in USA and have on occasion come across a recipe that I would like to try out but it has an ingredient "Italian sausage". Please tell me what this is or whether I could substitute it for chorizo?

Italian sausage is one that is typically made with pork and various spices, usually including oregano, garlic, parsley, and hot pepper and/or fennel seeds. Substituting with chorizo may work, but would change the finished product significantly. What recipe are you making? Maybe some of us can give you our opinions on how well chorizo would work.

Yes, you can use other types of sausages that are available to you. Even in the US, 'italian sauage' is available in many flavors from mild to hot and with various seasonings. It is not a single specific product.

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Homemade-Sweet-Italian-Sausage-Mild-or-Hot .....I would use the chorizo for some things. This recipe was pretty good and not too hard to make. I froze it in bulk and used in sauces. Stuffing in casings isn't my thing but I have formed them freehand for eating on a bun with okay results (for my taste)
