I've heard of lots of 'steamed' cake recipes, and 'boiled' pudding recipes. While I've made boiled puddings, I've never really tried steaming a cake. Have you? Do you know of any good steamed cake recipes? Also, is it possible to take a normal 'baking' recipe and follow as normal with the only change being to steam it instead of baking it? What are the dos and donts to keep in mind when steaming cakes? I'm going out so will only be able to check back much later. TIA :)

Steamed cakes and breads tend to be heavier than the kind most people eat (here I'm meaning the boxed mix variety). Expect your cake or pudding to have a moister kind of result. Just like baking a cake in the grill, it will be different. You might want to see if you can make a one egg kind of cake in your steamer set up to see if you like it! It will take longer in a pan than in individual poached egg cups, which take about 20 minutes.

Double this recipe, and steam in 3 poaching pans for 20 minutes! Great dense brownies!

Hi Sueb, thanx for the tips. I can't seem to find/see the recipe you're talking about. Would you re-link me please? :)

This is a WONDERFUL shortcake recipe. Just use your electric skillet to steam it in and viole' you have the most perfect little spongy cake in the world. I have not tried steaming a regular cake recipe, but hey.... Why not?

Both photos are mine. And, read the reviews. The time and temp are in there somewhere.

Mincemeat is steamed with cranberry sauce, pumpkin puree, eggs, flour, butter and sugar, and served with a sweet, creamy frosting.

The only steamed pudding/cake I've had is Christmas pudding. There are a few combinations out there like carrot/apple, but this is the more traditional. My MIL always serves this with a hard sauce ( butter, sugar, some kind of alcohol like Brandy). She always didn't have a mold to put the cake in, she usually wrapped it in cheesecloth. My mom uses a small glass bowl cover in foil. The texture is more heavy and moist, so you won't get a light fluffy cake. I would suggest following a steamed cake recipe as I don't think the results would be the same with a traditional oven cake recipe.

Yes steamed Christmas puddings are a must in my house. Some love it, some don't - I love anything Christmassy :D Yes, you're probably right about not getting light and fluffy cakes ... will let you know if I experiment with an oven cake recipe in my steamer. Thanx for the recipe westcoastmom. =)
