OT Rant please! I have 3 sisters I adore. One had surgery then back in the hospital again both within the past 2 weeks. I try to call each often but they can be hard to reach. I tell them call when you can, I'm always here. Now this sister upset that I haven't been calling to check on her. Said she posted it ON FACEBOOK that she had surgery!! I had told her before that my Facebook is wacky & just shows posts that somebody likes Tide or such mess. Really??!! Is this what is normal now, to post on FB the important things? Does nobody but me pick up the phone & call folks any more?

I don't know many people that would expect family members to learn about surgeries on FB. I don't think you did anything out of line. Sounds like sister needs to chillax. I don't have any sisters, but I know my brothers would never do that.

Crazy isn't it? I agree with you that phone calls and conversations between two people are the ideal way to communicate, not Facebook.

Seriously? Tell her that your sorry and that your crystal ball will be out of the shop next week. And then throw a pie in her face. LOL! Just kidding.

I have 2 sisters and when I was in the hospital, there was no shortage of phone calls. They called every day, and they live in Alberta. Then again I have to admit we are very close and talk almost every day anyway.Campergramma, you did nothing wrong.

Sisters can be a bit more goofy than brothers. Absolutely, they will come to a sibling with a health issue, or just as absolutely, they will not. (No middle ground) Brothers might be a bit different. I will call it "sibling rivalry", but there seems a lot of competitiveness between sisters, and such being said, they seldom want to admit failures or ask advice from siblings. So don't let it get you down...she does love you, and just needs a bit of "practice" on how she's going to tell you, or deal with you after that moment. Its your turn to be the "Mom" figure, and work with her, even if you have been a bit estranged. Treat her like you would like to be treated.

I totally agree with you HotGrandma. We have lost the compassionate side of communication. So sad!

Thank you all for your replies. I posted this just after supper then dozed off. I'm the oldest sister & the one who had surgery is the baby. She is all over FB & all of that. Thinks I'm old school for using email! Which takes her a month to acknowledge! Campergranmma, you are so right about the young folks having the fancy phones & not answering them. My dear son seems to have his phone glued to one hand & always typing something. Yet when me or his dad try to call, he never answers. May call later or not. Drives us mad! I don't send messages on FB which I think would reach him quicker. I do seem to have some luck if I text him but I hate to text.

My husband drives over-the-road truck. Two days ago said he wanted to talk to me in a bit. I logged on to facebook and saw a post he wrote about something that I would consider kind of important to let me know. First! I called him, and he realized I was upset. I just don't get it. Why couldn't he have called me and shared this news with me BEFORE letting the world know. So, not to get off on a tangent, but I do understand your frustration. It's true a lot of people are relying on social media as their form of communication, and I think it's not good. I am old school too, in that I like email and talking (especially with those I love). My daughter who is 13 never uses email at all. However, she does have her phone attached to her, texting and videochatting with her friends. She also likes to ignore my calls (like your dear son). I think that a call from your sister was in order to let you know what was going on. However, sometimes our expectations don't match others abilities or interests. Hugs to you hotgrandma!

I'm in agreement with you HotGrandma. I find out all kinds of family stuff on facebook. People seem to have forgotten how to use a phone, how to write a letter, how to communicate.

Social websites (or texting) do NOT take the place of communicating in person in my view. While it is fine to use that things to let causual acquaintences know of one thing or another, it is still proper etiquette to call and actually talk with people who are far aware about important family situations. Personally, I think it is a dreadul idea to post too much personal information online in those websites where virtually anyone can see it.

A friend of mine found out on FB that her daughter is pregnant. Another friend told her she better look at FB because " your daughter just posted something". They live in the same town too.

Oh boy..don't get me started! Everywhere I go I see folks of all ages walking, driving, sitting, running, while texting! It makes me crazy. Attended a very nice dinner the other night to honor a great group of kids..most of whom didn't put their phones down the whole time! I saw a report on TV this morning that all this reliance on electronic media is causing brain damage. Nobody has to know a whole telephone number anymore because its all available at a touch of a screen. Oh no..I've started..I'll stop now but you get my drift!

I am with you on this. In fact, I am not on FB for that reason, not to mention I don't feel its secure or safe - even though everyone says it is now with the security measures in place. I just don't like it. I would rather sit across the table from you with a cup of coffee and speak eye to eye.

Oops! I text a LOT...and I don't know any phone numbers anymore because my phone "knows" them. But I don't think I'm hurting anyone that way. I've never announced anything important on FB and I answer the phone when my mom calls...sometimes!

I rarely visit facebook. but am appalled at the way people use social media to inform family and friends of crucial situations. sorry little rant of my own.
