I am pretty sure this has been asked but... I want to make Tator Tot Casserole. The family detests mushrooms. What can I sub for the cream of mushroom soup? Not sure how cream of chicken would be!

What is your favorite recipe for this dish?

You can sub the chicken or celery and it is fine. I do it often.

I agree with Maggi - but would personally use the celery . . .

I agree with Maggi and Gammaray both will work, I would use the celery,or make your own cream sauce.

I've not made this but had saved it. No soup

Carrie, the recipe my family likes for potatoes like this calls for cream of chicken soup. They love it! It's like many of the recipes here, only I cook and shred my own potatoes.

Marianne - Do you just shred the potatoes and put them in the dish?
Mar. 27, 2013 7:00 am
This is NOT a dish that I make more than once a year, Carrie. I cook the red potatoes whole to almost not quite done and then shred them when they cool off. Then add 1/2 cup onion, a bunch of shredded Cheddar, 1/4 cup of butter barely heated with the soup, and then (omg) one to two cups of sour cream. Cover it with bread crumbs, a little melted butter drizzled over it. Bake for about 45 minutes. Honestly, one little spoonful is quite enough! That goes back to about 45 years ago of cooking!

:) That sounds really good Marianne. My DH would have a fit if I actually used sour cream though! Thank you!!!

Tater Tot Bake

A lickety-split version of that ever-popular standby, shepherd's pie. Seasoned ground beef and onions are sauteed, layered in a casserole with potatoes, topped with condensed cream of mushroom soup, sprinkled with cheese and baked.

Hi, Carrie! I'd try this one and sub cream of celery...I haven't made this one though I've done a tater tot casserole that had ham and broccoli from here that was really good! I'm trying to find it...

I make this one, but add a couple of minced garlic cloves while browning the meat and add a good amount of Worcestershire sauce to taste as well (otherwise in my opinion it is rather bland). I don't see why you couldn't use any other type of cream soup instead. Also, I put mine together differently than how the recipe states for crispier tater tots. Read the second review down under the recipe from "Stellar" I think. That's how I do it, and my kids love this:)
