I want to cook some filets for many people, can I brown them and then continue cooking them in the oven a couple of hours later.

If beef, then you really shouldn't be cooking them past Medium/medium-rare anyway. You spend to much money on that cut to be over cooking it. Define "many". If it's something like 6-10 just cook them a smidgen before people arrive and store them in the oven till service. If it's something like 25+ yes brown them ahead and warm in the oven.

If beef, the level of doneness is really a personal preference thing. I wouldn't assume everyone at your party likes rare meat even though some restaurants insist on serving it that way. I find rare/medium rare meat to be chewy and unappetizing but depends on your personal preference.
