Not food related but I just want to VENT! Just saw online that movie critic Rex Reed called actress Melissa McCarthy a "hippo" and "tractor sized". What has her weight got to do with a movie review and why is it OK to insult overweight people? I'm sick of it- inappropriate things said about ethnic groups, religions, gay or race are condemned-but no one defends the overweight. Wouldn't just about everyone choose to lose weight if they could? Judging by size (or any other characteristic) is just WRONG!

Nanny- I bet you have been judged on both ends of the "scale". You probably have a lot of insight into attitudes about weight.

yep- been made fun of at both ends of the spectrum-- not a good thing- it can really do alot of damage- people need to just stop- if you haven't been there you can only imagine-- it is as hurtful now (people telling me i need to gain) as it was before- i would gain -if i could- i did a new years resolution for 5 years- to gain 5 pounds- it just won't happen- i damaged my body so badly loosing the weight - not i cannot maintain it- but i love to eat:-) all is good

i cannot bring myself to buy boneless/skinless chicken-- although i have enough shin for all- i wanted at one time to have the skin removed- however if i did - i would probably only weigh in at 45 pounds-lol-

No one ever said it was okay for him to say that. Some people, like Piers Morgan for instance, are just jerks with no filters. I've always been on the super thin side myself and know that people do not hesitate to comment negatively about that and we're almost supposed to take it as a compliment.

But no, just about everyone WOULDN'T choose to lose weight if they could. There is an entire female culture here that prides themselves on their curves and even "rolls". To them, I'm just a skinny white chick, which is fine, but they can be merciless to one of their own the same size as me.

I agree as well. To many people judging about size. Doctors would say, overweight people worn't healthy and would die early in life...that's not always a truth to that...sometimes being over weight is due to a thyroid diease or what ever. I know a lady, right now who eats healthier then me and she's a thick gal, does her exercising, very active and still gets looked at negatively. I ain't skinny, but have gone through weight loss surgery due to a number of reasons...beauty comes in all sizes...we should look at peoples hearts on the inside and not appearance on the outside. I think Melissa McCarthy has a fabulous personality and is witty. She is a Beautiful gal. I wonder who this movie critic feel if we picked apart their appearance....it's not right!

I agree with Mis7up! If you can not judge a person by his/her characteristics then do not judge at all!!!

I had to look her up as I didn't know who she was, but she is not a hippo or tractor sized person by any stretch of the imagination. What does her weight have to do with her role or abilities, that is what his job is not criticising her weight. The same happened to Adele and she tore a strip off the person.

So agree with you! It is absolutely sickening. She's such a talented actor. Last time I looked there were parts in Hollywood for persons of every shape, size, color, and age. If you rely on your youth and beauty for parts, I don't think you'll be around for very long. I'm also sick of the jokes and humor around mental illness, we should all be more careful tossing around some of the phrases we use in everyday speech that are so hurtful to persons with addiction, head trauma, PTSD, and mental illness. Nobody would ever think of making fun or a person with cancer, why are other illnesses and physical challenges any different?

I agree and Hollywood seems to think its extremely funny to put a plus size person in their movies and use every stereotype against them and that is ok? But why is it okay to have stick thin models in Victoria Secret's commercial, but when a plus size model was used people said it was offensive and had the plus size commercial was pulled from the air. I just don't get it.

Like nanny I've been on both sides of the weight spectrum. Amazing how many people who commented on my secret to weight loss. Amazing how many of them turned red in the face when I said I had not been feeling well. Health is back but have a hard time gaining weight. Please don't say "how lucky I am" until you've walked a mile in my shoes. Rant over.thanks for listening!!

I so agree!!! The overweight's are the last group to be greatly discriminated against. I'm sick of all these high and mighty people judging other's lifestyles, eating habits, the clothes they wear, whatever they can find to be direspectful and judgemental! Life can be hard enough so let's be kind and take care of each other, not destroy each other, please.

Everyone here makes a excellent point.I think she is great.People can be so hurtful,my mom always said you need a little fat on your body in case you get sick. You need something to fight back with.I was made fun of growing up,cause i wore glasses, and couldn't speak English, taught me never to judge.

Those who are always ready with criticism of others are afraid someone will see the failure in their own lives so they point fingers. Too bad, if they are busy pointing out others faults they will never get thier own attended to.

Agree about discrimination, Cathy Myers! And Nonna, agree about the reasons. Most ugliness expressed toward others, in word or deed, comes from ugliness inside.

I'm glad that irayd8 brought this up here, and I agree wholeheartedly about the devastating effect that criticism and judgements can have on us...my Grandpa use to live by this unspoken rule...he would always leave someone feeling better about themselves than when he came...he was a generous and smart man....I'm grateful that all of you here at the Buzz provide me with such unconditional kindness.... xox

I'm a little late to the conversation but just wanted to direct everyone to this recent editorial in the Washington Post . . .thought provoking, and a good addition to the concerns people have. http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/how-size-profiling-harms-overweight-patients/2013/01/25/7dc9ed3a-602e-11e2-b05a-605528f6b712_story_1.html

Personally I think Hollywood is evil and wants evil to rule the world for the most part but eithe rway in reality everything is offending to someone now a day. I was over weight by 60lbs and was told so and though it hurt my feelings it was the truth! I've lost 30 and need to lose 30 more! Everyday is a struggle with it because I was always skinny and yeap I was insulted for that at one time as well! And most of the time I was given insults for being skinny was by people who were overweight. But I really didn't care so much because it was the truth! personally I also think it's insain to post such articles as news. There are way more important things and more seriouse things in teh world to be concerned about than who is overweight and who is not.
