Okay I cook for my family, sometimes for my clients( I am a caregiver) and get this question asked often, what is the recipe for this?? I always start out with a basic recipe, but usually as time goes on it gets tweaked and things added etc. So I sit down to write out the recipe only to figure out that's really not how I do it "now". Has anyone else had this happen to them. It's funny though I always bring out the recipe before I start cooking, but tend to not even look at while I'm actually cooking, lol. The last person who asked how I did Lemon Roast Potatoes I just looked at him and said it kinda depends on the day!

I almost never follow a recipe...I have like a basic reference but I tweak everything to my taste...plus whatever I have on hand. I am not meant to follow a written recipe! :)

Well so glad to know I am not alone, and don't feel like an idiot when asked to write down a recipe and pulling a blank. I once actually said to someone, well...you put about this much (showing them a small circle in the middle of my hand) of this in, then about this...it was a rather weird experience and they never asked me again for a recipe.

agree with everything you said motherhubbard. if a recipe i've never tried before, i TRY and follow the directions, but more often than not, i go with my gut. it's hard to rate recipes here. folks get angry about messing around with ingredients, more of this less then that, cooking methods, etc. i love the concept of the recipe...it often leads me to chsnge the recipe because of time constraints, ingredients, family preference, and taste. but i LOVE the orginial idea! it leads me on a journey to create something in the vein the orginial recipe was written. i am a type of cook that understands SOME fundamentals when it comes to what my folks will eat, so knowing their taste..i make sure they will like it...or at least try it :)

I got the same question and the same reaction to my answer which was the same as yours. i.e. about this much of this and this much of that... Someone asked how I made my spaghetti sauce and several people were trying to follow what I was saying but I don't think anyone was satisfied with my answer. I think they really thought that I was TRYING to be confusing! I've already learned through trying to submit recipes on this site that I actually have to dump spices out of my hand and into measuring spoons to come up with semi-accurate measurements. But like you said, I think I make things a little different each time!

Sometimes I follow a recipe. But, there are certain things that are "dump recipes," that I just make - like potato salad and macaroni and cheese. Someone wanted my potato salad "recipe," and I tried to pay attention the next time I made it, so I could write it down for her . . . I can tell you ingredients and method - but forget about measurements (=

most times i use the recipe as a base/guide and add or take away ingredients to suit my tastes. a pinch of this a handful of that, it never turns out the same way twice!
