Can I use margarine in place of shortening in these cookies? I have never baked with shortening and the whole idea just kind of grosses me out. Will these turn out okay with margarine?

NO! You need the fat content in the shortening. Most margarines are loaded with water (check the ingredient label), try real butter instead.

I haven't had any problem with stick margerine in cookies.Used it for 50 + years. Pretty much the same as shortening, but tastes a little better.

I never use margarine or shortening. Shortening is the main ingredient in that recipe. I would look for a different recipe. It is basically a sugar cookie with added spices.

You can use margarine but it is basically oil and water that tastes like butter. I use shortening all the time for cookies, frosting's. If I was going to sub the shortening I would use real butter. Your cookies will spread a little with butter but if you are afraid of shortening eating margarine is basically the same thing as eating shortening with added flavoring.

I use a recipe for sugar cookies with part butter and shortening. The main reason is that I do not have to refrigerate. Just roll and place on cookie sheet. Shortening makes them airier. They are divine. But you must go with what your taste buds enjoy most. As my nutritionist says "you probably should not eat the cookie in the first place" But if you are eat what makes you happy.
