Michael Thompson is looking for: (5 recommendations)
Michael Thompson is asking: (1 answer) I'm looking for a recipe. It is a bar type recipe the bottom is made with butter, flour, and not sure what else. The top is a combination of apple sauce and cranberry sauce mixed together and spread on top. The same dough that's on the bottom is made into long ropes and placed on top. It does get baked. Not sure if I will find the whole recipe. But if anyone has and idea for the base that would be awesome! My mother use to make this and unfortunately has had Alzheimers for along time. And trying to chase it down with family hasn't turned up this recipe. Any ideas? Sh

These bar cookies are made with a not-too-sweet pecan shortbread spiced with cardamom, with a jam filling. They're perfect with coffee or tea.

You need a touch of salt and some white or brown sugar it sounds like.

Hi Michael, We have an exchange student with us for the year, and just today, she made something that sounds like what you are describing. It's called "Crostada" in Italian. She made the dough, placed some of it in a 13 x 9 pan, topped it with strawberry jam (I'm sure a cranberry/applesauce mixture would work too), then made ropes out of the rest of the dough, and laid them criss-crossed, diagonally on top. Very pretty dessert bar. Here's her recipe for the crust part (sorry, you'll have to convert): 400 grams flour; 150 grams butter; 150 grams sugar; 3 eggs, a pinch of salt, zest of a lemon; 1 pkg of dessert yeast (this is an Italian product, but I believe the equivalent would be baking powder & vanilla - the Italian product is in powdered form, and vanilla flavored. I'd sub 1 tsp vanilla & 1 tsp. baking powder, and maybe a little baking soda). I'll post a picture on my profile, if you want to see the end result.

Cranberry apple bars sound so good! I could not find anything for you with applesauce and cranberry sauce, but came across this as a take-off idea for you. http://www.tastespotting.com/features/cranberry-apple-pie-bar-recipe
