I got a jar of 16 bean soup mix from my mil for Christmas it says to soak the beans overnight, drain then add the seasonings, water, smoked sausage/ham hocks and a can of tomatoes. Am I wrong I thought if you add tomatoes beans wont cook/soften? Any suggestions I was going to add at the end after beans were tender. TIA

That's news to me about the beans not softening, I've used a few different dried beans when making chilli, which is tomatoes, and never had a problem. Learn something new everyday. Yippee

I've never heard that before. I have a bean soup recipe that I've been making for years which starts off with a can of tomatoes added to the soaked beans. I've never had an issue with beans not softening. They should add flavor to your beans/broth/sauce if you start out cooking with them.
