I would say something regional, that says "East Coast", like real maple syrup, maybe, or chestnuts. Or, something that is hard to get or very expensive in Hawaii.

Do you do any crafts? I think something handmade is always nice even if you're not the one who made it if it was something made local to you. Maybe some hand crafted soaps? Monogrammed holiday tea towels or pot holders? What about something that represents where you live?

How about a few Old Bay products and some Old Bay recipes? Take a gift bag and tissue with you.

Lenox. Keep whatever you buy in the box and put in your carry on. A candy dish is always nice.

I would pick something exculsive to your area. Maybe a locally made candy or craft. I live in the PNW and smoked salmon is always a hit to out-of-towners. Any specialty locally owned stores? Handmade items are always a hit- scrapbook type handmade all occasion cards are always nice. When i went to visit my cousin in Georgia, I didn't know what to bring so I made a favorite things bag. I put in salmon, a sweatshirt of the Seahawks, a cd of a local band that i love, beef jerky from the local shop here, (famous in this area), handmade lotion etc. She loved it and it gave her a taste of my home.
