In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. — Lt.-Col. John McCrae (1872 - 1918) .... Because we care

Thanks for the reminder that so many men & women, both in the service & out, have given their lives to assure us the freedoms we too often take for granted.

Thank you laughingmagpie. I remember being chosen to read this to my whole school. I wasn't worried about speaking in front of so many people - I was afraid I would cry and be unable to get through the poem. I still am so strongly moved each Remembrance Day. It's an honour to pay tribute to those who gave all.

That poem always brings a tear, remember today to say 'Thank You' to uniformed men/women and their families. I am on my way to the Legion soon.

This is a simple method for preparing pureed pumpkin. The pumpkin may be stored in the freezer for later usage in pies, muffins, etc.

Donna, after you were talking about poppies the other day, I called our local VFW, made a donation and got about 100 paper poppies to give to my daughter who has been asking me about Remembrence Day/Veteran's Day. They also gave us about a dozen brochures with the poem that you quoted this morning. She is still in school, and usually wears jeans and t-shirts. But today, she has decided that, out of respect, she wants to dress a little more formally and to give her friends a paper poppy to honor the veterans.

Cookie Momster, that is a really wonderful thing that your daughter is doing. How old is she? Our kids are out of school here. My guess is if I were to go to the mall, not one kid or adult for that matter would have a poppy pinned to them.
