hoppin' John; hopping John

Said to have originated with African slaves on Southern plantations, hoppin' John is a dish of BLACK-EYED PEAS cooked with SALT PORK and seasonings and served with cooked rice. Tradition says that if hoppin' John is eaten on New Year's day, it will bring good luck.

don't forget the greens that go with the black eyed peas, a Southern tradition.

I agree with "Viva Banos" that one shouldn't forget the greens that go into this black eyed peas casserole. I use frozen mustard greens when I make this dish and Eckrich smoked sausage instead of salt pork.

Don't forget the cornbread and insert a coin into it (Don't forget to tell your family/guests that there's a coin in it). The one who gets the slice with the coin will have good luck and abundance all year.

I live in an area that this meal is popular. I personally don't like this meal. I wonder if there is some kind of substitute meal that can bring good luck.

thanks judy for bringing to mind a memory from my grade school. Sister Isabel would bake us cupcakes and one would have a nickel in it. It was good luck cause back then 5 cents would buy a big candy bar! Now, what about sauerkraut? Raw newyears eve, cooked with pork new years day!

I live in Arkansas....old timey people here are superstitious....you must have black eye peas...cornbread...hog jowl...and greens for a prosperous New Year. I am from the North...and this is strange food to me, but I like it all...especially the hog jowl....fried to a crisp.

Thanks for the recipe. I stopped at the busy grocery store this afternoon to buy herring, black eyed peas, and sauerkraut. No I won't mix them, but you have to eat them all at New Year's.
