Washington Wine Country: Columbia Gorge

By:   Carl Hanson

Find out what makes the Columbia Gorge unique and get recipes for pairing with wines from the area.

East of the Cascade mountains lies the sunny and parched side of the state where the days are warm and the nights are cool--near perfect conditions for creating "balanced" wines.

The Columbia Gorge lies to the west and just out of reach of the Columbia Valley AVA along the Columbia and Hood Rivers. This is white wine country, primarily Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris. Zinfandel is also gaining a name for itself here. Grapes are planted on both the Washington and Oregon sides of the Columbia and vineyards reach up the Hood River. Here the cool moist air from the river meets the dry high-desert air of eastern Washington to create a unique growing situation.
