Married to its Margarita, tequila's a sweet little love story. But knocked back with a taste of salt, it's a wild man let loose upon the night. It's several-sided. It's a sunrise, and a sunset. It's something south of the border and slightly mysterious. It's tequila!
"One Tequila, two Tequila, three Tequila, floor."
--George Carlin
Gift of the Agave
Near the Mexican village of Tuiquila, Spanish conquistadors first introduced pulque (a pleasant low-alcohol beverage long enjoyed by the Aztecs) to the distillation process, transforming it into the fiery spirit tequila. And the margarita? Long, lonely centuries would pass before tequila first frolicked with lime juice and orange-flavored liqueur inside a salt-rimmed glass. It was sometime around the 1930s, and the cocktail hour has never been the same!
