Nothing beats a fresh tomato, served in a salad, in slices with a little salt, or made into incredible sauce.
When to Buy the Freshest Tomatoes
Fresh, ripe tomatoes are available for only a few weeks. Which few weeks, you ask? Depends on where you live, and even what the weather's been like. In the South, tomatoes usually ripen in the spring. In the North, they may not ripen until late-summer or mid-fall. The warmer the temperatures, typically, the sooner the tomatoes will ripen.
How to Choose Tomatoes at the Store
Look for tomatoes with deep red color. They should give slightly when you press them. Note: Deep-red, perfectly firm tomatoes are usually only available during the fresh growing season. At other times, take what you can get, or, if your recipe will allow, used canned tomatoes.
How to Cut Tomatoes
Use a very sharp serrated knife so you don't bruise the fruit as you cut through the skin. (Note: Some recipes require you to peel tomatoes. Here's how.)
How to Store Tomatoes
Store fresh tomatoes at room temperature. Refrigerated tomatoes get mealy.
How to Grow Tomatoes
Most gardeners either start their seeds inside or buy tomato plants from the local garden shop. You'll want to ask the friendly folks there to recommend a variety that will work best for you. Whichever type of tomato you'll plant, you'll want to make sure you're able to give the plant eight hours in full sun.
