Go retro with a spread inspired by the first TV Dinners introduced by Swanson in 1954. Choices included meatloaf, fried chicken, Salisbury steak, or turkey--each accompanied by potatoes and peas. (And we couldn't help but add some all-American desserts.)

Everyone can eat dinner at their own home, but tell them to save room for dessert! When guests arrive, they can dig in to the dessert buffet before cozying up in front of the small screen.

Different Strokes
There are many ways to go about the TV party--here are some ideas:

• 'Tis the season. Catch up on the latest season of a TV show that's finally out on DVD or re-live some extra-entertaining episodes of a favorite series. You might want to plan on this party being a two-parter (most full seasons consist of four DVDs), or work your way through an entire series by making the gathering a monthly thing.
• Series regular. If there's one show (or a certain night of television) you and your pals just can't miss, make the party a regular fixture in your week. Take turns hosting and do each one potluck-style.
• Blast from the past. Take a trip down memory lane by getting a hold of television programs from your youth---many of the most popular shows have been converted to DVD (e.g. Family Ties, Night Court, Who's the Boss?, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, I Love Lucy, etc.)

Television Set(-Up)

• Go big! Get fancy with your TV party by renting a projector and screen for some big time viewing.
• TV trays. Purchase fun plastic lap trays for each guest to keep things steady while watching. Extra style points if you can find some vintage versions that actually stand on their own (check secondhand or consignment shops).
• Live studio audience. Pack as many comfy chairs into your "TV studio" as you can, short of making the journey to each impossible. Also, throw a bunch of pillows and blankets on the floor to make overflow viewers comfortable.
