Salt-of-the-earth coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) tries to balance the expectations of an entire community with the needs of his wife and children. Add in a cluster of colorful personalities like ebullient running back Smash Williams (Gaius Charles), or cheerleader-turned-teetotaler Lyla Garrity (Minka Kelly), plus intertwining subplots that deal with issues ranging from racism to infidelity, and it's easy to see why a show that's (only sort of) about football--has become a critical darling.
