Sweet Onions

Get tips and recipes for cooking with sweet onions.

Delicately flavored sweet onions (Vidalia and Walla Walla) are best for cooking, especially in recipes that call for raw or caramelized onions.


No More Tears

Slicing into raw onions releases the sulfur that causes those stinging tears. Grown in low-sulfur soils, sweet onions contain considerably less sulfur than other onions, so they aren't tearjerkers. And they're also less likely to cause indigestion.


Storing Onions

Thin-skinned sweet onions are more fragile than other varieties and need a little extra care to prevent bruising. They do best stored in the refrigerator, wrapped in paper towels to keep them dry. If you have part of an onion left over, tightly wrap cut onion in plastic wrap and refrigerated.

I love onions. I had an onion raiser to tell me years ago that the flatter the onion the sweeter it is. And it's true.

Sweet onions instead of sugar. A family secret to making great pasta sauce. Brown vidalia onions in olive oil in bottom of sauce pan before adding tomato sauce.

I never cry! I keep my onions in the refrigerator. And use a shark knife for peeling and chopping. My mom used to store onions under the sink. Those were some tearful times.

Hmmm. Sweet onions carmalized with mushrooms, butter and a little salt and pepper. All served on top of a grilled steak. Even after stuffing my face all day yesterday (Thanksgiving) my stomach is growling just thinking about it.

Did you know that the flatter the onion the sweeter it will be? True. Look for the flatest ones you can find. They're the best.

I've been making carmelized sweet onions with baby portobello mushrooms. Instead of all butter, I used 1/2 and 1/2 with citrus infused EVOO. Spectacular. Gives the dish a back of the tongue.... hummm. I bought some Meyer Lemon infused EVOO and have since been making my own citrus flavored with the best EVOO I can find. The lemon and orange oils come from King Arthur Flour and are used primarily for baking.

I saw on Martha Stewart to have a lighted candle right by where you are cutting onions. Stops the tears!

I like to take peeled sweet onions, cut the ends off, and quarter. I wrap them in foil and had 2 - 3 tablespoons of butter and grill for an hour. Once they're done, I top them with freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

Sweet onion sliced thin and placed on a soft hamburger bun. Spread butter on both sides, mayonaze on the other side top with thinly sliced sweet onion, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Mmmmm enjoy enjoy. good for you too heard that raw onions keep colds away.

This was my grandfathers favorite sandwich. Sweet onions and honey. Hope someone gives it a try and lets me know how they liked it.
