How to Buy, Prepare, Store and Grow Strawberries

Who can resist the aroma and flavor of a freshly picked, perfectly ripe strawberry!

When to Find the Freshest Strawberries

Fresh, local strawberries are usually available in late spring and early summer--so as early as February in states like Florida, or as late as may in chillier parts of the continent.

How to Choose Strawberries at the Store

Look for firm berries with bright red color. If you can smell the berries, that's a sign that they're exceptionally fresh.

How to Prepare Strawberries

Wash the berries and gently dry them with paper towels. Not dish towels; you don't want to learn the hard way how strawberries can stain.

How to Store Strawberries

Refrigerate loosely covered and eat them up within 48 hours.

How to Grow Strawberries

Easy to care for and simple to harvest, strawberries are a very popular DIY fruit. They prefer well-drained soil in full sun. There are thousands of varieties of strawberries, each tailored to different climates, so ask the friendly folks at your local garden store for advice on what variety to plant.

Pesticides, pesticides ! What a pity ! Strawberries are delicious, but are one of the most sprayed fruits, and contain a huge amount of pesticide residue. It's not such a good idea to eat strawberries unless you grow your own.

I just picked 16 lbs and froze them - wash, let dry, cut off the hulls, place on a cookie sheet one deep and freeze. This will keep them from sticking together. When they are frozen, put them in a zip top freezer bag. Now we have strawberries ready for smoothies, desserts, or just eating as a frozen treat! Also - when you have freshly picked strawberries and put them in the fridge, they lose some of their sweetness. We kept enough out for a couple of days, but they ripen very quickly, so eat them fast! This is not a problem at our house...they are soooo good.

I made some delicious chocolate covered strawberries with melted Lindt chocolate, butter and cream (melted together in a double boiler) . I drizzled over some white chocolate with a pastry bag. They were very yummy!

A healthy but delicious snack that involves strawberries is to simply have a bowl of fresh, local strawberries with sugar-free whipped cream. This is an amazing summer snack, and the rich, sweet flavor really boosts your mood!

Another simple and sweet snack with strawberries is to put sugar on them! When I was younger, my friend and I would come into my house, and we would eat a bowl every time she came over! This is a great sticky snack to eat in the summer!
