Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Night

By:   Allrecipes Staff

Celebrate this fun holiday on August 8!

Established by Pennsylvanian Tom Roy, this day encourages sharing. "Due to the overzealous planting of zucchini, citizens are asked to drop off baskets of the squash on neighbors' doorsteps."

About the Holiday

Inspired by the "Submit an Entry" form in a copy of Chase's Calendar of Events, Roy and his wife, Ruth, have launched several creative holidays.

A few suggestions from Tom Roy's "Top 20 List for successful sneaking of Zucchini or otherwise ridding yourself of unwanted surplus summer squash:"

(Note: Allrecipes does not endorse any of these activities.)

  • Look for out-of-the-way places which have signs posted, "Clean Fill Wanted."
  • Under light of full moon, either stark naked or wearing full army camouflage, carrying a machete or any garden implement, run amuck in your zucchini patch, cutting and slashing. Be sure to thank Mother Nature for her bounty before and after this cathartic experience.
  • Buy a large roll of freezer paper--the kind that sub shops use. Then proceed to wrap each zucchini that has managed to grow to a foot or more in length. Next time your child has a fundraiser, send him or her out supplied with these phony subs. Tell child to drop them off with neighbors or relatives and leave quickly. It's advisable that a responsible adult hover nearby in a get-away car.
  • Gather all available plastic containers and freezer bags. Drink a vat of your favorite caffeinated beverage, in preparation for staying up 'round the clock to purée large quantities of zucchini. This can then be packaged neatly and artistically labeled: "For Zucchini Nut Bread Recipe." These packages can be freely given, along with copies of recipe, to anyone on your Christmas list.

I personally would wear clothes to run amuck in the zucchini patch, and maybe even long sleeves. I love zucchini but hate the plant leaves make me itch.

    Amen to that one.

Maybe clothes for harvesting but naked for delivering? Make sure to smile if caught.

ohhh naked all the way... works even better if you live IN town

Hee Hee.....sounds like a great Holiday plan. I may have to pass this along to all my gardening friends this year so they can get on board and we can celebrate together!

One year I had 8 plants for my small family. I was always trying to share our bounty. My husband said, "If our friends leave their bag of zucchini, don't try and give it to them again. I think its a hint."

this is my first summer in this house, I don't think that is one of the better ways to introduce myself to the neighbors....bringing zucchini is bad enough, but naked!?! I might have to move!!

I live in the city. I wish someone would leave a bag of zucchini on my porch (and naked would be even more of a treat!)

I too, would love for someone to leave zucchini on my porch! I don't have much of a green thumb myself.

This is the first year in about 25 that I haven't had a garden. I miss my daily trip to the zucchini plants.

Harvesting and distributing Zukes in the buff? My husband would like this Roy character. Maybe I'll add notes to the squash when I leave them - needs a good home! Updating my calendar for August 8th!

this time of year is a great time to remember food banks and other places or put them outside and put up a free sign. my favorite way to use them is to stuff with meatloaf mix and bake with spagetti sauce.

    Jul. 31, 2009 6:33 pm
Everyone around here has so much zukes coming out of our ears that I think I would have to drive miles and miles to give them away.

    Aug. 1, 2009 10:16 am
I give my oversized Zukes and Crook necks to the local Zoo. They love them for the primates. Every little bit helps. Sometimes I get free tickets. Although my son works there too.

Had to take a cake to a picnic and under the cardboard box bottom I stuck 4 zucchini! I sneak them into things all over the place. I drove down the street and stuck them in other people's mail boxes .... husband drew the line at putting them in the collection plate at church tho ....

    Aug. 3, 2009 9:37 am
Maybe not the collection plate but the food bank or soup kitchen? Ours takes all extra veggies one would care to give.

    Aug. 3, 2009 10:46 am
I have 10 zucchini and yellow squash plants. So far I haven't had an overabundance of summer squash to give away but when we do, I'll make sure to send my husband commando under the light of a full moon to gather them. HAHAHAHHAHA! :) Then, my children and I will give them to neighbors the next day.

Why do people in low crime, small towns lock their car doors? To keep people from putting zucchini in it.

    Aug. 3, 2009 2:05 pm
I always grate the big ones in the food processor and freeze to use in vegetable soup all winter. It pretty much disappears, but gives the broth some body. However, I may have to reconsider for Aug. 8.

Send me ur addresses and I would be pround to mail you some Zucchini. There are some great recipes on this site for them too. Yummy

zucchini bread and butter pickles! i wait all year long so i can put them up for the holiday gift baskets and enough for me for another year! the heat in our neck of the woods has had me considering making them in the buff, but it would be my luck to spill something somewhere important other than a canning jar.........

    Aug. 3, 2009 5:37 pm
I love being naked!!! This sounds so fun. I have so much Zucchini this year I am glad to read about this, I will be giving some away for sure, clothing optional

Thirty-two years ago, my father planted 12 hills of zucchini. It has gone down in history as the "Zucchini Summer". We had zucchini at every meal, people quit comeing to visit us. My sister won an essay contest in college writing about the Zucchini Summer. My brother to this day will not eat zucchini. I am fairly certian that he would leave zucchini in unlocked cars around the city simply to get rid of it.

I do send the neighbor kids home with zucchini every time they come to play with my kids. Come to think of it, I haven't seen the neighbor kids in awhile now! Hmm, I may have to try the naked thing next.

    Aug. 4, 2009 5:29 pm
LOL...Can someone give me some zucchini? The only thing I grow blows into my yard on accident... does hacking my weeds in the buff count?

    Aug. 5, 2009 6:24 am
Watch out for the dogs! With no jeans to buffer the bite...OUCH! Too funny! Thanks for the laugh!

    Aug. 5, 2009 5:30 pm
Um... I think I'll stick to slipping them in car windows, mail boxes, hit and runs, hanging them from roo- DON'T JUDGE ME!

If I went into the garden naked...it would ruin the plants for life! And, any unsuspecting neighbors!

    Aug. 6, 2009 8:51 am
    So far I only have 1 zuke...I don't think I'll have that problem! :(

    Aug. 6, 2009 1:16 pm
Thanks for the laughs,I really enjoyed reading the blogs and laughing at some of your ideas. Don't think our pastor would be real pleased if I placed the zucchini's in collection plate...but he sure does not mind me sharing with foodbank at church.Church members know I will be offering up zukes this time of year.I have people calling to see if I am making Zucchini bread or Chocolate Zucchini cake.Always easy to share those items. I have eaten Zucchini Lasagna, think I will print recipe and give it a try. Looking at the recipes and trying to come up with some ideas. Sure would hate to resort to stuffing zukes in the paperboxes in the dead of night............

    Aug. 6, 2009 6:05 pm
I refuse to grow zucchini because of being the recipient of the over abundance. You really have to love it to grow it

    Aug. 7, 2009 4:47 am
I think my neighbor read this because yesterday I found 4 zukes, 10 tomatoes and 3 plastic grocery bags full of green beans on my back deck! I don't mind though, this year I was unable to have a garden.

I worked in a nursing home as an activty therapist for over 30 years and we used the "Chase's Calendar of Events" to plan our fun events. When this date came around, we made our own zucchini bread for our afternoon snack. To add more excitement, one of the residents at the home was secretly given zucchini wrapped in paper. The residents were then encouraged to talk with other residents over the week-end and find out who had the zucchini. If someone asked if you had the zucchini and you did, you had to give it up. Residents were given score cards and when they talked with other residents, both signed off on it. If the zuchinni was passed on, both residents signed off. On Monday, the residents who had the most conversations with other residents, the resident who had the zucchini the monst and the resident who had possession of the zuchinni when the game ended won prizes. The prizes were zucchini bread, zucchini seeds and thropies made of plastic zucchinis. I need to add that the lady who had the zuchinni at the end of the game went to bed early on Sunday night and stayed in bed late on Monday morning in order to keep the zucchini. She was 89 years old. This was fun, as were most of the activities we designed the "Chase's Calendar of Events." Thanks for the memories.

I'd leave zucchini on neighbor porches if my plants had survived TT______TT

What a delight, to dance under the full moon naked picking zucchini! Luckily most of my neighbors are used to it. My favorite zucchini are the "vacation zucchini." The ones that should have been picked but were missed BEFORE I left to go on vacation, and when found upon my return, are the size of pudgy dachshunds, and hard as gourds. "Vacation zucchini" have ended up being carved as jack-o-lanterns, thrown at irritating neighbors (the ones who don't appreciate my midnight garden outings) and of course used to make obscene bulges in clothing, when I'm wearing some. Luckily this year my partner and I have eaten every zucchini grown in our garden as we've gone vegetarian and find zucchini is a multi-talented and versatile vegetable in meals, in addition to its many other talents outside the kitchen.

I just got done picking 8 zucchini off of one plant!!! I already have 6 on my deck and I don't want to see another one! I make my husband take them to work and pass off to everyone there!

LOL, luved reading this.........yes, dancing naked, picking zucchini...that's a job for my partner ! I'd scare the plants to death. Giving them away is my part........I go to the lower income housing and give alot away there, food pantries, & of course my unsuspecting neighbors...lol. It's fun thinking of different ways to unload my extra's onto them...lol.

I've not grown zucchini in probably 8 years, but well remember the large quantity just a few little plants produced. That was the year my whole garden went into making homemade baby food for my son. I too found lots of interesting ways of using up the zucchini. The best still remains just shredding it, letting it sit on some paper towel for a bit and then shoving into freezer bags. Stuff lasted for years!!!! I've not ventured into growing zucchini since, if I do, I think I'll only plant one little plant though. :) Have fun all....loved reading all the comments.

THESE ARE ALL FUNNY. I WISH I HAD SOME ZUCCHINI, BUT I CAN'T AFFORD EVEN GROWING THEM. SORRY FOR THE SORRY EXCUSE OF SOMETHING TO SAY

The Zucchini comments had be in stitches. The people who use your site are the smartest, most creative and have the greatest sense of humor. It has been years since we have grown a gsrden but I still recall the over abundance of zucchini that we tried to pawn off on everyone we knew and those we didn't know. Thanks for keeping me laughing.

All right. The kids had a blast dropping off zucchini on the unsuspecting neighbor's porches. We're making this an annual event. One neighbor even called to say thanks! I took pictures and posted them on Facebook. My family is in stitches!

My mom had a garden when I was growing up and we had our share of zucchini. I make stuffed peppers with them because I can't eat peppers. If you invite unsuspecting friends over for dinner you can get rid of a lot of them that way!

Someone said this Sunday, "Lock your car doors while at church - it's zucchini harvest time!"

    Aug. 12, 2009 12:04 pm
I LOVE this idea, and am totally going to do this. Left a huge bag on the door of the gastropub in the village but it was in daylight - not nearly so much fun. Am getting the kids kitted up for some espionage. Great idea, thanks!

http://thebecster.blogspot.com/2009/08/fhe-doorbell-ditch.html We wore clothes when we left squash at the neighbors and we always change the appearance of the squash. The link to the blog above has two pictures. Get creative with your gifts to your neighbors!!!

I have one LARGE zucchini plant and can't keep up with it. I harvest once or twice a day. There are many bags of frozen zucchini as well as casseroles and bread in my freezer. I've dried them for soups and stews. The veggie drawer in the fridge is full and so are my neighbors and friends. So, I have a question: What are you people with 8 or 12 plants thinking??? If I had that many, I'd have to hire a full time picker! Sneaking? With a forklift???

    Aug. 16, 2009 8:14 am
would someone please leave some on my porch!

    Aug. 16, 2009 10:54 pm
Ditto! I love zucchini brownies, zucchini baked with meatloaf filling and spaghetti sauce, zucchini bread. No one ever leaves a bag of zucchini on my porch, naked OR clothed. Dang!

Would the people who WANT zucchini please show your city/town! I would gladly pass along some! My brother doesn't want to see me, my neighbors tie the dogs out on the porch and lock the doors if they see me coming (and leave a dog there at night~). Even my boss who said there was no such thing as too much zucchini is threatening to lock the door when I come to work!

Leave some at my house. I usually head to the Amish farms to get my produce. They grow the best and is by far cheaper than anywhere you can get produce. I eat zucchini almost daily. YUMMY. Please don't do it naked tho, my hubby would probably want to help" naked" too! lol

    Aug. 25, 2009 5:04 pm
I usually have so many zucchini I make the zucchini bread by the dishpan full. Figure the amounts needed for multiple batches & put all the ingredients in the dishpan (clean of course), take off your jewlery & mix it all with your hands. Talk about getting into your zucchini bread. I also have made pickle relish out of zucchini, that is really good. I enjoyed all the comments & I can hardly wait to check out what was written about cucumbers. As for naked gardening, it might be fun if there were no bugs. I wish I had thought about dropping on the porch & leaving. very cool idea.

oh my gosh, what funny vegie people ! Our northeastern summer was barely that, so I have finally gotten just a couple of small yellow squash from my plants...hardly any tomatoes due to the so-called "late blight" Maybe next year will be better. Cheers !

For those who have picky eaters try shredding the zucchini in Lasagna or for those with gluten allergies cut the larger zucchinis in to slices in exchange for the noodles. Other ways in serving is dipped into egg and fried.... Leaving for the food bank is good if the people that receive know what to do with it. Better if you leave recipes or if you love to bake make up tons of muffins or bread. easier to freeze and pass out. It also helps out the soup kitchens, less work for them and easier to pass out to the people. As for placing them in the collection plates that's funny naked in the garden nope the plants are itchy and I heard in some places the window are rolled up and doors locked since it is very easy to get your car filled with the zucchini and other veggies.

PS to the last post our zucchini did not do so well this year between the wacky weather, squirrels and slugs we got very little. How ever one of our neighbors and had better luck. When we plant we are out there everyday picking them for salads and fried zucchini we planted the yellow butter sticks and regualar the butter stick tasted the same as the green and they out grew the crook necks.

this is a beautiful custom! where i live (israel) no one grows zucchini as far as i know, and they certainly don't leave it at doorsteps... i wish that would happen to me! squash muffins, squash soup, zucchini parmesan...

    Jan. 18, 2010 11:40 am
Another idea for sharing at church which will spare the collection plate and free people from locking their cars: Our church sets up a free produce table in the lobby where anyone can leave excess veggies for others to take. The older members and apartment dwellers without gardens love it and it always seems that someone has more of one veggie and less of another. We just take what we want and can leave a cash donation for the world hunger fund to "pay" for the food we take.
