Ramadan

Assallamu Alaikum--May peace be upon you.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The month's sunrise-to-sunset fasting officially begins on the first night that the new crescent moon is visible. In 2014, Ramadan begins at sundown on June 28.

With an entire month's worth of Ramadan meals to prepare, try mixing up your menus with these recipes from around the world.

I agree with Lori (above)! I am a convert to Islam and it is so nice to be able to add some international recipes to my American cooking during this special and blessed month. Let's just remember that Ramadan isn't about food -- it's about focusing on food less so we can remember God :)

I grew up in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, 10 years from age 3 to 13 almost 14. I remember everyone saying that they could not eat from sunrise to sunset. I do not understand all these pre-dawn recipes???

Aug. 21, 2009 5:03 pm
I visit this website everyday and I was *so* excited to see Ramadan included! To PDK, we eat "breakfast" before the start of sunrise, hence the "predawn" recipes.

When I was a child, we just accepted without question that Ramadan was never going to be a part of the greater culture. It seemed that no one knew about it at all and Muslims were on their own to celebrate. The fact that Allrecipes made the effort to include Muslims by posting recipes for their favorite holiday is a huuuuuge step and very much appreciated! May everyone's fasts and prayers be accepted during this blessed month and may we always remember those less fortunate than us. Amen.

I agree, it is so great that there is a collection for Ramadan now. If anyone has been looking, I JUST posted a recipe for Beghrir (Moroccan Pancakes)... I wanted it to be in this collection, but I think it can't be part of one unless it has some reviews? Maybe next year. :(

Thank you for making my favorite web site even better. Including people from all different backgrounds and faiths and celebrating our similarities (we all seem to love food!) and learning about our differences can only be a good thing in a world that desperately needs more understanding. Thank you for building this bridge!

As a person of faith I find this a particularly important time to stand in solidarity with my Muslim brothers and sisters in honor of the Creator whom we all serve. As a Southerner, the best way I know to do that is with food! :-) A joyous Eid al-Fitr to all--I'll be eating well with you!

I join all the other commenters and say, "This is great!" I'm not Muslim, I am a Baha'i. However, we also have a fasting period that lasts from sunrise to sunset. Ours is March 2-20 every year. So I plan to bookmark this link (and hope the link is still available in March) and add these to my list of recipes. Maybe you can even repeat these and other recipes for the Baha'i Fast in March. Great job ALLRECIPES.

I am not Muslim but my cousins are, and growing up I would often celebrate Ramadan with them, and I always looked forward to the food! I was always afraid to try to recreate the Egyptian foods, (the often over simplify recipes) but now I think I can do it! Thank you so much!
