Ramadan

By:   Allrecipes Staff

Assallamu Alaikum--May peace be upon you.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The month's sunrise-to-sunset fasting officially begins on the first night that the new crescent moon is visible. In 2009, Ramadan begins at sundown on August 22.

With an entire month's worth of Ramadan meals to prepare, try mixing up your menus with these recipes from around the world.

I am so thankful for a group of recipes dedicated to Ramadan! When I go to the masjid, there are always all types of great dishes from different countries and I would love to be able to try to recreate them.

I agree with Lori (above)! I am a convert to Islam and it is so nice to be able to add some international recipes to my American cooking during this special and blessed month. Let's just remember that Ramadan isn't about food -- it's about focusing on food less so we can remember God :)

I grew up in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, 10 years from age 3 to 13 almost 14. I remember everyone saying that they could not eat from sunrise to sunset. I do not understand all these pre-dawn recipes???

Aug. 21, 2009 5:03 pm
I visit this website everyday and I was *so* excited to see Ramadan included! To PDK, we eat "breakfast" before the start of sunrise, hence the "predawn" recipes.

When I was a child, we just accepted without question that Ramadan was never going to be a part of the greater culture. It seemed that no one knew about it at all and Muslims were on their own to celebrate. The fact that Allrecipes made the effort to include Muslims by posting recipes for their favorite holiday is a huuuuuge step and very much appreciated! May everyone's fasts and prayers be accepted during this blessed month and may we always remember those less fortunate than us. Amen.

I'm an addict of this site, and now LOVE it even more! I've been asking people for years to teach me how to cook, but the asking stopped when i found this site! everything I know is from here.

I agree, it is so great that there is a collection for Ramadan now. If anyone has been looking, I JUST posted a recipe for Beghrir (Moroccan Pancakes)... I wanted it to be in this collection, but I think it can't be part of one unless it has some reviews? Maybe next year. :(
