When you're on the go, you want something easy, yet delicious--and definitely something that won't make a mess en route. Use these tips for preparing a potluck dish that will look like you just walked it out from the kitchen.
Perfect To-Go Potluck Dishes
Spare yourself unnecessary hassles. These types of side dishes make the best travelers:
- Dishes that need no reheating
- Pre-baked casseroles held together with cheese or eggs
- Slow-cooked dishes
- Salads with separate dressing to be mixed in just before serving
- Pasta salads
- Savory pies and tarts
- Dishes frozen ahead of time to be defrosted and/or baked at the destination
Before you select a dish to bring to the dinner party, be sure to ask the host what he or she needs to fill out the spread. Also, find out whether or not there will be space in their oven, microwave, stove, or refrigerator for your dish.
Prepping for the Trip
Before you start cooking, find a container that will transport your dish best. Consider how it needs to be padded, heated, cooled, or otherwise altered in order to arrive safely:
- Wrap the dish so it is solidly set into the container. Use plastic wrap and aluminum foil generously to ensure the dish is airtight.
- Consider freezing the dish in advance and baking it at the party destination.
- Label the dish with your name, the name of the dish, and any directions for serving it.
- Bring a serving utensil and any condiments you want to serve with the dish. Label these items with your name so you don't loose track of them.
- Secure the dish in the car so it can handle the ride to the party, especially if the dish is hidden from sight in a cooler or a heat bag.
