Peeling Ginger

By:   Allrecipes Staff

Easy steps for peeling this unevenly textured part of the ginger plant.

As the part of the ginger plant that grows underground, ginger has the ability to grow both new stems and root systems. Ginger has become a very popular ingredient in many cuisines, and can be found in most supermarkets across the United States. When shopping for ginger, look for firm ginger with a smooth skin. Ginger freezes well, but before freezing it is best to break the ginger into smaller pieces (without peeling it). Wrap the pieces tightly and individually, and place in the freezer for up to six months.

1. Peeling or scraping ginger with a spoon is one of the most common ways to peel ginger. The skin is thin and scrapes off easily. Some people use a common vegetable peeler to peel ginger. Using a peeler will create more waste than is necessary. We used a large piece or a “hand” of ginger, and a common spoon to illustrate this method. Rarely would you ever need to peel this much ginger.

    2. Scrape the ginger with the inside of a spoon, getting the edge of the spoon into the crevices of the ginger.

      3. The skin will come off with a gentle scrape.

        4. Once complete, you will notice the ginger looks almost identical to how it looked before peeling. Removing the skin of ginger does not alter the shape the original piece of ginger held.
